Rechecking our timetables, and allowing for 5 minutes connection time, we board the 21:43 Merseyrail service 2U64 to Liverpool South Parkway, arriving at 22:27 Friday evening.

Doesn’t the overnight rule only run to 5am? Normally that’s fairly academic on a Sunday, but Edinburgh has a decent array of buses available at that time of day (and before)?

The first train of the day isn't until 8am from Waverley on a Sunday, but yes, I agree the use of buses from 5am onwards should apply.

We've all been there Paul, don't worry! You know what I'm like when I post arrival times of 10:00 on Sunday evening or 21:00 on Monday morning, etc

Anyway, it looks as if the N37 doesn't serve Penicuik town centre on the return journey back towards Edinburgh, and it looks to join back up at Mauricewood Road which is almost a mile away. Therefore we do have no option now other than to wait for the first of the day time services. However, Lothian are known for running immensely early on a Sunday morning, and so we board the first northbound service of the day, the 0449 Lothian Buses service 37 to Silverknowes (Silverknowes Parkway), arriving there at 0552 on Sunday morning.

We now board the 11:05 12:08 CrossCountry, and after our busy night of traveling we soon fall asleep. Waking up at Derby, we decide to keep going, and many hours later find ourselves in Penzance. Looking at the clock, we discover it’s 22:42 Sunday evening. Nearly 12 hours on a voyager .

That's a VAR Timetable. The usual service only goes to Plymouth and arrives at 1943. It only takes 2 hours from Plymouth to Penzance anyway.

Aagh...I'd registered it was VAR so I looked at the XC timetable, but it's so hard to read that I muddled it with another service. Why on earth do they put the Aberdeen and Penzance portions in a seperate bit to the rest of the timetable! Anyway, I think/hope that the through train to Penzance actually leaves at 12:08, which is within the allocated 2 hours so should be allowable?

There appear to be no more departures from Penzance at this time, so we stop off overnight and return for the 0505 Great Western Railway service 1A75 to Reading, arriving there at 0933 on Monday morning.
