From memory the plan was to open the line just as the Kielder Forest was hitting peak production, and I understand there would have been 2 or 3 train loads a day - the production is massive there. However, the Government were unwilling to provide help with the capital funding, so the traffic went by road. The Government then spent money on upgrading the roads.
No toilet paper tissue is made in the UK. It is all imported in huge rolls. This needs to change after Brexit and be made of Kielder timber transported on a reopened railway to Carlisle and beyond.

Why? If loo roll is currently imported, it's because it is cheaper than producing it here... so why would we want more expensive loo roll?

I'm pretty sure that isn't a true statement, and neither does the paper industry agree:
For tissue, softness and bulk are key attributes, meaning it is expensive to move converted (sales ready) product long distances. Accordingly, most domestically consumed product is supplied by UK mills, though significant numbers of parent reels are imported as well as some shop ready packs. However, most conversion into final product is carried out relatively close to where it is sold. Of product sold in the UK, around two thirds of the paper is made in the UK, though a higher percentage will be converted in this country.

I tend to check these things (loo roll !) , particularly when buying re-cycled stuff. Most seems to be UK manufactered. Should be really as it is low value / high bulk.

In passing , various student friends did summer jobs in these "mills" Prudhoe and somewhere near Thatcham.

Well if it isn't then someone on the telly is lying. It was discussed in a program on Brexit. All toilet rolls that are made in the UK, 30% of total used, are made of imported tissue. Rolls may be made in Hexham of imported tissue. It is being stockpiled just in case there are problems after Brexit.

Someone lying about Brexit? Surely not. Did you read that stuff about toilet rolls on the side of a bus?

Someone with blinkers wedged this firmly in place is never going to be swayed by arguments based on such fripperies as common sense, financial reality and living in the real world...
