Why is it ?
Why have the EU doubled up on a working system ?
Likewise, why do they want to double up on the GPS system, or NATO ?

GPS is effectively owned and managed by the United States - can't remember the breakdown of ownership and responsibilities but it's a mixture of federal government and the USAF. The EU don't want to be reliant on that arrangement. With the way things are currently going in the States, it's a completely understandable position to take.

SIGH - do you not know how NATO works? Any nato member is required to help another NATO member - we pay for this. Same thing for europol and Galileo - we pay towards it via the membership fee and we get the benefits.
Why do the UK use HOLMES or HOLMES 2 when there are systems out there? Why don't we just rely on the interpol systems in place? Europol allows the EU to share information between member states that's relevant to the EU and they are able to amend the system for EU member states where as HOLMES2 is specific to policing in the UK and interpol is world wide - all have their place.

We pay into Nato and also the Galileo system (well we do currently) we wont have access to anything other than the public data stream (this is a rule the UK put in place on Galileo) The Chinese and the US system can transmit false results to the public system. We will still have access to Galileo but only the public system (again a UK created rule that only EU members get access to the encrypted side of the system).

You are aware you can look all this up online - You would think on a forum like this (where people are interested in the detail) there would be a higher level of reading up on an important topic. I guess some people just dont care about anything other than a specific view.

As to knowing how NATO works, to misquote A Few Good Men, I was on that wall while you were still in nappys, so that you could go to your debating society. No need to thank me...sigh.
Now, again, why is the EU determined to have Europol, which isn't as comprehensive as Interpol; or an EU army which isn't as capable as NATO ?

So you dont know why we have a British army or created HOLMES 2 how about why are we planning on producing a UK GPS system? Its all the same reason.

I suspect we have both because there's very little overlap between the two.
So you think there'll be very little overlap between an EU army and NATO ? NATO is there to protect all signaturies from being attacked, a bit like our pact with Poland a few years ago. So what's your take on why an EU army is in the offing ?
Don't come back with "why do we have apple pies and wind turbines" or other similar electron wasting daftness.

and how to solve the irish question?:

1) remind them that under EU legislation vis a vis defence, their participation is COMPULSARY (ie no more neutrality or get-outs for them as they are,having their butts covered by nato and USA.)

2)turkey will most likely be leaving/removed from NATO anyway. They have their sights set on headship of the caliphate.
Trump sees this and is looking for an excuse to dump them......I think turkey's mission creep and over-extension in syria will be the catalyst.
The EU is still too busy courting turkey because it's ambition is re-form the old roman empire-of which turkey was part.They don't yet realise that at some point turkey will turn hostile.
The EU is also too busy virtue-signalling and trying to point the blame at US/UK for a war we didn't start(find out who bush+blair really work for!)

Nearly £100 million of UK taxpayers money has been paid to European ferry companies for 'no deal' contracts. No 'value for money' process. None of the usual government procurement checks and balances. Just money thrown at haste to European companies to help the UK leave Europe. Bonkers.

The French and Danish ferry operators must be rubbing their hands with glee.

Happy with that brexiteers?

The ironic thing is that Poole, Plymouth and Portsmouth all voted to leave, large amounts of extra trucks are the Brexit dividend I suppose.

Lookout for queues on the A3 then. Unlike the M20/A20 between Ashford and Dover, it is a major commuter route south of Horndean.
