Nevermind the aesthetics, surely how good they are should be rated from the driver's seat? After all, they're hardly the prettiest of units whatever light cluster you put on them.

They are pretty good, though the HID headlights that I mentioned before aren't far behind.

The big difference is when you pass one going the other way. These Electrostar-style headlights are way too dazzling which means you have to take your eyes off the road to preserve your night-vision and avoid getting "orbs". The HID's are way better and don't dazzle in the same way.

I expect Southern to do enough to make the units presentable and servicable. It's hardly the economic climate to start "pimp my 313" in.

We certainly don't want to let Tim Westwood anywhere near them!

He's the well educated guy that pretends to be a chav/gangster. He's also about 65 now. :)

my apologies:

either Xzibit or that gurning fool Westwood said:
Alright! We know you love taking the train to the beach, so we've brought the beach to the train!
Here in the BDMSO the guys at "South Coast Customs" have fitted out a Tiki bar, with a sand effect floor. On your way to work you can relax with a refreshing cocktail whilst you lounge in the deckchairs.
In the PTSO, we've fitted a wave pool, taking advantage of the motion of the train to generate a gentle swell.
Finally, in the DMSO, we've given you your very own "flowrider" indoor surf machine. Ride that wave all the way from Shoreham to Worthing!

I made 65 up completely! I should have said 165 to make it quite clear that I was joking.

Mind you, if he really is 52 then I am even more shocked!!

Having just read through this entire thread from page 1 to 17 (yes I am mad!) I am surprised to note that no one has mentioned that in the days of the old slam door stock we on the coastway lines were usually (mis) treated to some of the more elderly trains that ran on the BR southern network. I'm not talking VEPs & CIGs here I'm thinking more on the lines of the life expired 2-HAPS and 4-CORS in the late '60s early'70s. so it is not to anyones real surprise down here that with the imminent introduction of class 313s to the Coastway services we are once again about to be forced to use the clapped out dross that other lines have discarded much like the 442 on the Brighton main. No matter how much you paint a train or re cover a seat in nice colours it still cannot hide the fact that it's considerably older and less comfortable that a 377/3 which is what we have enjoyed so far. We were promised new trains for the Brighton line, we got them and now they are slowly taking them away again!

Also what no one else has picked up on is that Southern have stated that Worthing/Seaford is not the only route they intend to run them on. I have heard a rumour that they are planning to split the Brighton Southampton service at Littlehampton in about a years time and use 313s on two legs of the journey Brighton/Littlehampton -Littehampton/Southampton to circumvent there being no toilet facilities on a 313. How true this is I don't know but I wouldn't put it past Southern to try it!

We do in fact have 6 on the books
313101, 204(104) and 205(105) are at Stewarts Lane
313102 is at Wolverton
313108 and 109 are at Lovers Walk and have been there since December.

Not sure about the Southhampton thing... However I stated ages ago that southern would be using them on Brighton-Seaford, Brighton-West Worthing and Littlehampton-Bognor.

I can't argue that a 313 is better than a 377, but the 313s are seemingly bullet proof and given a decent refresh will run for years. Arguably longer than the 377s, which will fall to bits just as the 313s are getting run in!!

You'll be fine with them as long as they get some TLC.

Besides the doors sticking in really cold weather, I think the main problem is always down to the switching between AC and DC. As I presume these will now be DC only, there's probably nothing major that CAN go wrong with them.

Given that they are in a 3rd rail only area, then they will be DC only :) With a refurb inside i think they will be fine.

Of course, having just written about how great they are - I managed to travel on one that left Drayton Park after the AC/DC switchover that proceeded with emergency lighting only - clearly something didn't change over properly.

The worst thing was that I was so 'into' my BlackBerry that I didn't even notice until we stopped at Highbury & Islington that it had got significantly darker. :)

Will there be any special celebration to mark the last 313 on the NLL, to mark the total takover of those god awful 378's. <D

Not sure but they should do a special tour covering every part possible of the existing NLL using a pair of 313s, :)

I doubt they will... it's not like they are being scrapped.

Wonder if the 313s could also make it onto the Portsmouth-Littlehampton services?

I though they were just replacing /3s? Usually I see /1s & /4s on those. Although I have had a /4 to Seaford & West Worthing before... :?

I they are replacing /3s.

/4s are sometimes used at weekends i think...

I know a /4 or /1 usually does the Brighton-Ore.

I doubt the 313s will do Littlehampton - Portsmouth.

/1s and /4s always work Brighton-Ore trains because they interwork with Ore-London Vic trains, which are obviously always four coaches.

Any kind of Brighton-based 377 can turn up on Littlehampton-Bognor/P&S, in my experience.

How do the different sub classes of 377s compare to the old slam door units? Ie, what would the equivalents of a VEP, CIG, COP, etc be in terms of 377 types? How would a 313 fit into this?

Well basically, it doesn't fit in. If i had to chose something i'd say it was like a Thumer, no compatible with the emus.

But the 313 cannot couple up to any other unit on the Southern Network.
