Class 455 blinds

Hi all,

I have the right hand side blind off a class 455 (the bit that has "via..." and then the route code), and I'm desparately looking for the left hand side one with the destination.

I've come across the attached on eBay but the buyer doesn't know what train it's off. Does anyone have any ideas whether it is off a 455? Or if anyone else has one they are willing to sell?

I'm not even sure that it's a "via" blind as it goes on to list locations such as "Waterloo", "Strawberry Hill", "Windsor & Eton R", "Sorry Not in Service" and "Empty to Depot". I'm sure someone from SWT will confirm or deny, but could it just possibly be the case that the same blind was fitted to both sides...?

This blind is definitely taken from a Class 455 unit.

Well the DfT may well decide to keep them in service for longer than around 4125. It is all dependent on whether the Thameslink project has been completed and Bombardier have finished delivering the 377s...

One thing which I would like to see is a modern design variant of the 313, think maybe 378s but with similiar layouts to the 313s.

Still, one does wonder if it wouldn't have been better for the DfT to take FCCs 317s and change them for 321/4s so the GN sees 313s/321s/365s.

A trio of points here:

1/ It's definitely NOT a 1970's one, that's a brand new blind from a refurbished 455, a 1970's one is white, with black lettering & has things like Holborn Viaduct on it!
I Know that I've got one, which I was given by a fitter who was changing them a good few years ago & it's NOT for sale.

2/ The other side has Junction, Olympia, Shuttle + all of the via's

3/ Where did he get it from? The seller's in Shropshire!

I knew it wasn't a 1970s one as I have the corresponding one from the other side, which is the one you describe, SWT Driver.

As to where he got it from, I don't know, but I bought mine from a Railwayana stall in 2005 at Barrow Hill Roundhouse!

The top pic is correct for a train from Guildford as a stopper, all stations except Berrylands, New Malden and Raynes Park.
A few still run today (to/from Waterloo), but its 10 if terminating at Woking (normal service) with the same calling pattern :roll:, why they are different is lost in the depths of time.

It has a few LTS destinations on it as well and a date from the '70s, would the 315s have had these on them? It would be good to know what kind of train it comes off, if anyone can help!

Well the Cl315 fleet was split at privatisation and only recombined again about three years ago. Back then, the WA and GE units had very different destination blinds. The WA units had blinds with both WA and GN destinations while the GE unit had blinds with GE and LTS destinations. It's only very recently that the entire fleet has had replacement blinds fitted with WA and GE destinations. However, what destinations they had back when they were new I couldn't say.

All that aside, I expect that a blind like this would be generic. Just because a certain destination is shown it doesn't make it any easier to identify the class it came from. Therefore, even if it had destinations way out on the GE lines such as Clacton and Walton it doesn't mean it didn't come from an inner-suburban unit like a Cl315. The old Cl317 blinds had, in addition to the expected WA and GN destinations, Leeds, York, Grantham and even Spalding.

I stand to be corrected, but I believe that Class 313-315 units carry 24inch wide destination blinds and the earlier classes carry 27inch wide blinds. I would welcome any info to the contrary.

A good indication of which blinds were carried with what trains can be gained by looking at a wide variety of photos.

As mentioned, some blinds were (and are) generic.

Rather than order new blinds, the destination blinds carried by slam door DMUs allocated to Laira in the late 80s and early 90s, were robbed from Class 142 units before their reallocation towards Manchester. As a result, they were a lot smaller than the box provided and Newton Abbot couldn't be shown without showing part of another destination either above or below!

Either by local instruction or by choice, most (if not all) of the photos I've seen of Class 118 units allocated to Laira before their replacement by the Class 142 units show their destination blinds set to a white blank.

I have the same blind as you have posted. I lean towards the fact that it's a Class 315 blind, because the date stamped on it is when they were being introduced to traffic. The marks on the left hand side of the blind (the photo looks as though yours is the same), look like water has seeped in from where the gangway door is located too!
