A couple of weeks ago I was travelling from Hillfoot (unstaffed with TVM) intending to change at Partick onto the Glasgow Subway and make a few more journeys around town, so a Roundabout ticket suited me best, which is a rail/Subway day pass inherited from Strathclyde PTE days. The TVM at Hillfoot doesn't sell Roundabouts, so I followed ScotRail's 'Buy Before You Travel' advice and bought a ticket to Partick with the intention of excessing to a Roundabout from the on-train staff. It turns out the on-train staff could *sell me a Roundabout from scratch*, but couldn't excess an existing ticket up, and neither apparently could the ticket office at Partick, who just gave me a Delay Repay form and asked me to send in any tickets I had bought, with a covering letter, to get a refund of any excess paid, which was just too much hassle for the difference.

What's the correct way of obtaining a Roundabout if the TVM doesn't offer it? Board without any ticket and explain myself to the conductor when I'm challenged?

My understanding is you can just purchase it direct from on board staff - no need to buy any other ticket first.

Roundabout ticket
The Roundabout ticket gives one-day unlimited travel by ScotRail and Subway to over 110 stations within the Greater Glasgow area. Roundabout tickets are valid after 09:00 Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and Glasgow public holidays.

Price: £7.00 for adults and £3.50 for children from staffed ScotRail stations or from on-train ticket staff.

I've bought them a few times from the TVMs at Glasgow Central in the past (though not for about 3 years now). Do the TVMs no longer sell them?

If not, I too would be interested in knowing why not?

ScotRail do indeed have a "buy before you board" policy but there is no penalty fare system. Any guard or ticket examiner will sell you a ticket even if you have boarded at a station with ticket issuing facilities, the only restriction is that you are not entitled to any railcard discounts unless you boarded at station with no TVMs/ticket office which of course is not a problem with Roundabouts because there is no discount.

The TVMs that I have used won't sell them which is a real shame because it is an excellent value product.
