Concept (inspired by Old Oak Common concept for HS2)
Hugely improve West Hampstead (3 stations into one interchange), Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction.
Have enough platforms on ALL routes, so ALL trains stop including Intercity on their way to/from termini

Firstly demand....would it reduce the load on the termini and zone 1, and would passengers prefer Overground interchanges rather than zone 1 Underground (easier now most Intercity ones have seat reservations)?
Secondly Intercity objections.....would those operators hate the headline journey increases, or be OK as long as the station facilities and interchanges had enough platforms and were genuinely attractive?
Thirdly, and most importantly, can enough platforms be fitted in for capacity, particularly on fast lines?
Google maps plus crayons....
West Hampstead
Fast down MML platform on the south side run round loop
If got need + budget then move up MML slow Eastward and make an island, mainly using builders yard.
New Met/Jubilee Eastbound Island to North of current Jubilee island, which then becomes Westbound Met/Jubilee island
Chiltern difficult without major demolition but Westbound Met line unused due to above.
Willesden Junction
Fair amount of space, but need minimum 6 platforms and probably 8 so fast lines have 2 each?
Move NLL station northeast so WCML slows can move north a bit?
Clapham Junction - needs hugely expensive upgrade anyway to enable more fast line stoppers
Lastly - need a proper travelator connection into Old Oak Common.

Just need a few billion quid and we are good to go......

I agree with all this in principle and think it’s exactly the kind of thinking the government should pursue. The idea of making West Hamstead an intercity stop on the MML didn’t occur to me but the idea of doing more with Old Oak Common and Wilsden Junction certainly did.

However I would change some minor details. Make Old Oak Common the main terminus for the Chiltern Main Line by diverting it onto the New North Main Line and into OOC.

Try to have all Eurostar’s stop in Stratford. In fact with the HS2-HS1 link, why not have at least some of them terminate in OOC instead of St Pancras?

There is no HS1-HS2 link in the plans any more. Hasn't been for several years now.
