Going through the journey planner website to, surprisingly enough, plan a journey, I follow the link to "Buy Now" and redirects to Northern website which tells me "No tickets are available, please refine your search". I have tried TPE website with the same result.

I am trying to travel Newcastle to Skipton via Carlisle 21/12/2018 @ 09:03.

Anybody got any tips how to get the TOC website to offer up tickets for the journey?

Is it because NRES is offering two separate fares and they aren’t being passed over to Northern properly?

I dont know - how could I tell?

Does it say "this ticket requires two or more tickets"?

Indeed that won't work.

The only train company I know of to enable combinations of tickets on their website is Chiltern, though it's possible others have too.

Most TOCs are rather hostile to using a combination of tickets for one journey, despite not offering one through fare for some journeys, or not permitting the fastest or most convenient routes for others.

There are accredited ticket "splitting" websites that will offer such fares.

I just selected “buy” the 0913 Newcastle to Skipton via Carlisle and on the next screen it showed two fares £11.00 and £7.50 that added up to the £18.50 originally displayed.

There’s no obvious warning on the first page that it’s offering a combined fare, I’m sure it used to be flagged up a lot more obviously.

Yes eventually found it "You need to buy more than one ticket for this journey"

Also tried Chiltern, which offered to sell me the ticket, but could not get that website to correctly apply the railcard discount.

Thanks for the help

I believe Chiltern's website is by Vix Technology, which is the same system as used by LNER and is riddled with errors and bugs.

Have you tried Trainsplit?

It definitely uses the same supplier for fares data (SilverRail IPTIS) but it may not use Vix for the front end. It may be purely SilverRail.

Not the same front end, no. But the same fares data provider, for sure.

I'm not sure how many of the bugs on either system are related to the front or back ends, but both leave a lot to be desired.

I am in the process of trying trainsplit, but cannot get that website to offer a journey itinerary that NRE offers.

20-DEC Carlisle to Lancaster via Skipton @10:49. I presume it is because there is a 5 minute connection at Skipton (arr 12:53 dep 12:58). NRE allows this arriving Lancaster @ 14:13, but trainsplit.com does not show this & gives an arrival time of 16:08 with a 2h5m wait at Skipton.

BRTimes shows Skipton as

SKIPTON is classified as a MEDIUM interchange station.
Minimum Connection Time is 5 minutes.

Is it enough to buy split tickets myself and print off the NRE itinarary as proof of valid connection @ Skipton if there are any delays?

Is there any reason for trainsplit.com not showing it as an option? Some setting I am missing perhaps (I have left the "Allow Extra Change Time" blank)

Try Appleby as a via point. Just putting Skipton as a via is no use as it's actually quicker to go direct from Carlisle to Lancaster on the 11:49 Virgin departure, then doubleback from Lancaster to Skipton to arrive at Lancaster at the same time as if you'd left Carlisle on the 10:49 Settle & Carlisle Line departure!

EDIT: Ignore that - it seems to be displaying on TrainSplit fine with Skipton as a via point. I'm not sure why you're not seeing it.

Edit again: my logic was wrong - it's not quicker to go direct to Lancaster first. I don't know why it won't show the correct schedule without somewhere like Appleby or Settle as a via point.

I can't replicate that - with Skipton as the only via point I'm getting the correct route via the S&C then LNW (1 change at Skipton) but with a 2h05 wait at Skipton - as reported by the OP.

Changing the via point to Settle gives the same route (1 change at Skipton) but with a 5m wait.

I'm not sure why that is.

You're right - I wasn't looking closely enough. I don't know why it's not allowing the itinerary with the 5-minute connection at Skipton, since that is a valid connection.
