High Wycombe (HWY) - Glasgow Central (GLC).

You get the option of the "Not London" route which is via Banbury; the NFM CD04 gives it as "route Banbury / Preston " with restriction code 2T i.e. valid on all trains except those which depart before 0415, price is £114.80 and the ticket is an Off Peak Return which seems odd as travel can be during the morning peak if going via Banbury. This means the ticket can be used on the first train from HWY to BMO (Birmingham Moor St.) to allow change at New St. onto a BHM - EDB ( Edinburgh) train changing at Preston for the Virgin Train to Glasgow Central.

Alternative is HWY - GLC +Any Permitted : £115.90 Off Peak Return restriction code 5F - Travel from Euston after 0905.

Here's the crunch. If I buy a HWY-GLC +Any Permitted will I be able to use this ticket on the first Chiltern train from HWY-BMO , the 0607, changing onto the 0820 VT BHM - EDB, getting off at Preston and then boarding the 10.41 VT Preston - Glasgow Central which is the ex. 0830 London Euston - Glasgow Central ? The worrying thing is that an inspector may see my ticket when I board the train at Preston and say that it is an Off Peak Return, +AP, restriction code 5F so it is not valid on a train which departs Euston before 0905 and this very train departed Euston at 0830 ! I know its a clever way of bypassing the time restrictions but is it valid ? As I am boarding at Preston and not Euston and the time is 1041 it should be valid ? I would like to return via London, hence the +AP ticket.

Thanks !
Z

The restriction says that the ticket can be used after 0415: that is exactly what it means, "Off-Peak" or not.

We need to consider the wording carefully. The restriction is:
Code:
OUTWARD TRAVEL
You may travel on any train
that is scheduled to DEPART as
shown below:

RETURN TRAVEL
You may travel on any train
that is scheduled to ARRIVE_as
shown below:

DEPART: LONDON EUSTON
At or after 0905.

ARRIVE: LONDON EUSTON
At or after 1005

DEPART: MILTON KEYNES CENTRAL
At or after 0900

ARRIVE: MILTON KEYNES CENTRAL
At or after 1020

DEPART: WATFORD JUNCTION
At or after 0900

ARRIVE: WATFORD JUNCTION
At or after 1020
Since the 1041 from Preston is "scheduled to depart" from London Euston before 0905, you may not use this ticket on that service.

Instead, why not buy the "route Banbury Preston" ticket and excess the return half only to be valid via London? The excess would cost only 55p and would mean you get the benefit of both available routes.

Hmm ... Interesting. So the "Off Peak route Banbury / Preston ticket" is definitely valid on the 10.41 VT ( ex 0830 Euston) from Preston to Glasgow ?
Do I get issued with a separate / additional ticket when a ticket is excess in this way ?

Cheers,

Use the Not London, and get an excess for 55p for the rtn portion to go back via London. This should be made available when you buy your ticket but can also be done later.

The excess is usually stapled on top (but "desperate" LU staff sometimes rip the staples out)
