Back in the early 70s I occasionally did the return trip between Teesside where I lived and Chester where I was at college by a combination of motorbike and train. I had a Honda 50 which I could get into the guard's compartment, usually with a bit of help. I would do one leg of the return journey by train and the other leg on the bike. A 150 mile 5 hour journey over the Pennines on a Honda 50 was tiring. 300 miles in a weekend was too much, although I did it once.

I am now trying to find out if such a journey would have been possible between Bournemouth and Oxford at that time ie did the trains between those stations have carriages with a guard's compartment.

I think if it was classic BR stock every train would have had a proper guards van - with an "office" bit if it was loco-hauled (like some of the Bristol Weymouths.) Even EMUs and DMUs had secure luggage/mail space, not that they were locked off from from the passenger side "corridor" very often.

Those trains would normally have been loco-hauled in the 70s, and should always have had a separate guard's compartment. Trains ran from Poole/Bournemouth to Birmingham and then various destinations beyond Birmingham (e.g. Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle) (Some also started from Weymouth, mainly on Summer Saturdays)

That is no longer the case - the old "no passengers in the leading coach above 100mph" went for new stock when the Class 180s and 220/221s came in.

Thanks for those replies. I just wanted to get facts right before putting pen to paper (fingers to keyboard) in a story I am writing.

are they not classified as multiple units so exempt any way ??
brought about by this accident if my memory serves me correctly ??
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polmont_rail_accident
It's about passengers in the leading vehicle above 100mph - nothing to do with if it is a multiple unit or not - and, yes, it was after the Polmont derailment.

Going back to your original comment of "basically if it has a loco pushing the first vehicle cannot have passenger accommodation" that is clearly wrong - the DBSOs (as involved at Polmont!) had passengers in the leading vehicle throughout their lives after the accident. Likewise, the new Mark 5 vehicles for TPE have a driving vehicle which will have passengers in it.
