If I get a P2P ticket at an unmanned station and travel to another unmanned station on a train with no guard (not uncommon on the Buxton line at night) how am I supposed to honour the promise? Is there a mechanism for paying on line or should I send a cheque to head office?

A cheque by post is fine and is preferred. Don't forget to enclose your P2P and make the cheque out to 'CASH' as it avoids a lot of annoying paperwork ;)

Seriously, though. You are only promising to pay on board or at the next available opportunity. If there is no opportunity available, you have not failed to keep your promise.

I suppose that the next available opportunity is when I next travel via a manned station or guarded train be that the following morning or a year later.

In reality you've got away with it. If you don't want this and would like to pay, just go online, buy the relevant ticket and don't bother collecting it.

The Buxton line (South of Stockport) is not a penalty fares route (yet) so you will not be able to get a promise to pay notice. (Just so you don't waste time trying to get one out of the machine)

I wonder how long I can make my location on this f
As other posters have said, buy the ticket online and don't collect it.

However, if there are truly no opportunities to buy at your origin, on the train, or at your destination - just don't pay. This is perfectly legal and the company needs to do a bit more than that if they are to expect fares, frankly.

Don’t worry about it; if they can’t be bothered to offer you an opportunity to pay then you’ve no obligation to chase them up.

They don’t deserve a penny at the moment anyway, imo

But a promise made is a debt unpaid, and the rail has its own stern code. :) (Apologies to R W Service)

On the Buxton line in the evening they often run coupled DMUs and the guard is always in the back set whilst all the savvy passengers are in the front. I understand that Northern have some rule about having an official in each of the sets: driver is in front, so guard must remain in back.

And yet some services out of Preston towards Manchester will have 2 people in a 4 car checking tickets all the way!

There is no mechanism for this.

I know people who have written to Northern requesting an invoice to pay when there was no facility at origin and destination or on board and Northern replied along the lines that there is no need to pay for such journeys.
