That is the Halton Curve, which has been served by one train a week on summer Saturdays as a Chester - Runcorn service

Ah, should have checked the RTT link really... didn’t know this service ran. Learn something new everyday.

Ah, should have checked the RTT link really... didn’t know this service ran. Learn something new everyday.

It runs via Warrington because until recently it couldn't take the short cut via Runcorn.
Now it could do that, but it's too hard to change it before the new hourly service comes in (and run by Transport for Wales, not Northern).
Interestingly, TfW had their poster (on a scrolling screen) up at Lime St yesterday announcing themselves as "your new train operator".
After the change, Northern will be integrating the Ellesmere Port service into its new Chester-Leeds service instead.

Chester Ellesmere Port Leeds??? Really? That would involve reversing at hooton or a double reverse at helsby and Ellesmere Port wouldn’t it?

No, when it serves Ellesmere Port it will be instead of Chester.

Chester - Leeds that doesn't go to Chester? Or did I miss something?

Would certainly free up the bottle neck at the east junction. When this Chester - Liverpool service comes in it’s going to get very tight.

Nothing like breaking a clear, understandable hourly pattern to serve a line that barely anybody ever uses. Merseyrail needs extending (once an hour) - that is the only sensible way to serve it. Or get rid.

I went on the lime recently on the evening service, which is a worse service than the mid afternoon service that did operate and tended to have a few passengers use it. The line really should be in the hands of Merseyrail and run it Liverpool to Helsby vie Hooton and Ellesmere Port. You can then connect at Helsby for onward connections. These odd terminating stations like E Port , Kirkby and Ormskirk should all be extended to more useful Points ie Preston , Wigan ( Skem) and Helsby.

The only problem is I seem to recall Merseyrail wanting to build a new line to serve Cheshire Oaks.

I fully support that. That place is a nightmare for traffic. I would think a stop at Cheshire oaks would transform the line too.

Bore off with the merseyrail extensions. It's not happening.

The services will terminate at different spots due to space at Chester.

One service will be all stops from Chester - Victoria

The other will be Ellesmere port-WBQ-NLW- Vic and onwards.

It's a vast improvement in connection for Wales to the North East and all in between.

A bogless merseyrail train isn't cutting the mustard. Mainline rail is required, not a bit part extension to a self contained network - which might I add works well as it is.

The May 2018 timetable change made the service worse. I didn't think that was possible.

I believe the original plan was to try and make the limited service into something that might be more useful for commuters - there would have been a morning service from Ellesmere Port to Manchester Victoria, timed to arrive at MCV before 9am, and a return working from Manchester departing after 5pm. So possibly some "9 to 5" office workers could use it.

However the May 2018 timetable fiasco saw this postponed and instead the current 3 train per day service is probably here until at least May 2019.

Separately, there is a suggestion that at least one of the new Merseyrail class 777 EMUs will have batteries fitted as a trial, to see if it is feasible to extend the current Wirral Line service to Helsby.

As someone who has been involved in the traffic management at Cheshire Oaks, it would make very little difference to the traffic levels. It would be good for the retail park as it would open it up to additional shoppers who don't drive but most of the current visitors won't walk 100 yards across a car park, let alone leave their motorised cocoon dozens of miles away and be inconvenienced by anything. Sadly a sign of our times.

You might think that, but the Metrolink extension to the Trafford Centre is going ahead...

I've always liked the idea of a light people mover between Ellesmere Port & Cheshire Oaks.

I don't doubt a rail link of any type will be good for the shops but you won't prise most of the current shoppers out of their car with a crow bar. I've seen them drive round and round and roundthe main car parks because they won't go to the multi storey at the back.

An extension to Cheshire Oaks doesn’t look very cheap....
Isn’t there a load of redevelopment going in at Stanlow that would be better and easier to connect up to Merseyrail?

Does anything look cheap these days?

I won’t argue against someone who’s been involved with the traffic management at CO, I can only speak for myself, but it’s 10 minutes from my house and the last time I went there was over 2 years ago. I don’t go there because of the traffic, if it had a railway station I would go back. I can’t be the only one with this attitude. I appreciate there are people that will actually drive from one part to the other to avoid walking anywhere, but at the moment, a train isn’t an option so there’s no real way of knowing if it’ll be successful or not. I think if enough people get behind the idea, it could gain some momentum.

I guess a bigger question would be (assuming that the link would be into the East end of Ellesmere Port station) : would the train link serve the customers of Cheshire Oaks who currently go by car - unless they are on the Birkenhead to EP line they won’t swap.
