I know that despite what some people say, onboard well trained staff are needed. How do I know? Because in my experience as soon as the smallest thing goes wrong, people come looking for you.
It is that simple.
Agreed.
But that role is admirably resolved by the OBS role that Southern introduced (seemingly very successfully) - No responsibility for door opening/closing and *in extreme circumstances* the train may still operate with just the driver. In my view, this is where the RMT should be looking if they want to resolve this dispute. Unfortunately, they've already shot themselves in both feet by refusing to recognise OBS staff.
