Bill Hoole who was driving 60508 when it overturned and killed his fireman reported for work the next day ( he was heavily criticised by the rest of Top Shed staff for doing this) Nowadays how many weeks off would the driver get?
Difficult to say really. If you hit the person at speed you might get a red mist over the front of the window. That could put you into quite a shock. Not sure how that would affect me. You can get a window that is completely shattered by the force of the body hitting the windscreen that you can't move the unit and are quite shocked that the body didn't come through into the cab. I think that would impact me quite a bit.
There is also the reverse where you don't even know that you killed someone because there may have been just a knock to the side of the unit that you barely noticed and the Signaller had to stop you and inform you that you just killed someone. It may even be the case where multiple services were running over the body all morning, as was the case recently with the 'artists' on the Catford Loop. So you may just be informed that your service may or may not have run over the body. It may even be a case where you came back to work within a reasonable time because the person who was under your unit survived but was in hospital, however he just died and Management needed to let you know. I think that may cause me to take a few weeks off, maybe because it was playing on my mind for weeks and then knowing they didn't survive caused me some distress.
Dunno really. It's hard to say how it would affect me as a Driver and how much time I should take off, or be concerned that other Drivers may need to cover my work or if I was ok to even return to the cab, or potentially suffer from mental health issues because I just killed someone with my train. Generally I think that a potentially career ending incident needs to be treated with some respect and that maybe that fear of losing your job, sleepless nights leading to medication, coroners court, witness statements, and flashbacks of body parts underneath your train; might, and I'm not saying everyone, but just might affect people differently.
About 30 yrs ago i was on the midland main line when we were stopped for about 30mins. Finally moved to see the aftermath of a PUT on the up
I think the current generation is too litigious for a TOC to take a chance at others witnessing body arts strewn across the track.
and not only on the railways The road organisations also take the attitude that every severe crash is an 'crime scene' and roads are shut for hours. There doesnt seem to be anyone to take charge of clearing the traffic held up, as seen in several recent crashes.
We had one recently. It transpires the guy was pushed onto the track. A clear case of murder. If that was mopped up and cleared up without investigation then the murderer would have got away with it. Weirdly the murderer returned to the scene of the crime a few days later and was himself almost hit by a train that was going near 80mph and missed him by less than an inch. Thankfully that 'near miss' was correctly reported and investigated and the suspect taken into custody. The two Drivers who missed him by the a whisker had no time off and were normal duties the very next day.
We have advanced in many areas of technology so thing could be brought back to normal asap, but it seems no one does anything to implement it.
Hoover + Pressure washer ? Maybe automation could continue with the unit in service with a shattered window as the Driver doesn't need to see out. Maybe to at least move the affected unit into the nearest station or passenger loop ?
I think with the advent of *FFCCTV the incident is recorded automatically so they could use that as evidence to show the sequence of events and combined with OTMR data resoring evidence we can check if the Driver used the horn correctly and at least attempted to use the emergency brake before hitting the person, or indeed persons (As sometimes its a child, teenager, mother and daughter, young adult, OAP and sometimes more than one at the same time)
I think with onboard screens nowadays you could display the front camera ( this has been a requested feature) and maybe you could send live updates on the clean up progress ?
