Morning y'all. Twice in the last week I've found myself on a TPE 170 on the Manchester Airport / Cleethorpes route. Asking a guard about this he said it was to release more 185s for the Scottish routes. How long has this been happening, and how many of the 170s are now on South TransPennine diagrams?

From the timetable change next month:

Monday to Thursday, 1x170, 0515, 0754,1255, 1455 Airport - Cleethorpes and 1955 Airport to Sheffield. 0540 Doncaster - Airport, 0928, 1128, 1628, and 1828 Cleethorpes - Airport services.

Saturdays (2x170) 0515 and 1255 Airport - Cleethorpes and 0928 and 1628 Cleethorpes - Airport.

Can't remember Sundays but is a 2x170 diagram, but different to Saturdays.

It has probably been running with 170s for around a month now. Fridays remains 185 operated apparently.

Thanks for the info. I found them on Thursday's 0511 Sheffield - Airport and Saturday's 1711 (?) Sheffield - Cleethorpes. Heard the driver referring to them as 'like being back in the dark ages' to a colleague.

Does this mean that more Hull diagrams will go over to 185, or are there enough 170s to cover?

They're all ex-SWT units and have the reliability factor of a Trabant or Lada.

I know I broke most of them.

:lol::lol::lol:

Must have had you on serveral london bound services then...living in basingstoke so thats probable...

Well, All the ex SWT units except 170392, which of course, has now headed back to its original planned TOC of Southern...and is now 171730...

As for the replacement...309 was 399 and came from Central Trains...

As for using more 185s on the Hull services, would be interesting if they are becasue theres a few weight restrictions on the hull line thus the 185s have to travel below 75mph...

The 170s have been doing the Cleethorpes - Manchester Airport routing since about 29th September when the route was reopened haven't they?

Probably since then yes. Wasn't there a 170 based at Cleethorpes throughout the closure for crew training?

Nope! Not on Londons!

Brighton - Reading's. I had the same turn for a week at my old depot and it went like this...

Monday: Unit Failed WSP Failure.
Tuesday: Low Power, Low Oil Pressure & Coolant Fault (OOS)
Wednesday: Engine Failure (Rear Car) (OOS)
Thursday: Got to Reading & got a round of applause! :D
Friday: AWS/TPWS failure. (OOS)
Saturday: Booked a Desiro via Guildford....

PS. I'm a JINX!

So what are you driving now, class 159/158's or have you gone over to the dark side and started driving electric trains?

I've always driven juice trains.

In my career I've driven EPB, MLV, CIG, BIG, BEP, VEP, REP & TC, CEP, HAP, CAP units.

Classes 08, 09, 33, 47, 73, 158, 159, 170, 442, 444, 450, 455, 458.

Do you think I've got enough experience yet?

I'm not sure. As far as I can see, no. At least 2 185s will be required by my on back of napkin calculations on the 0820 ex MAN yesterday.

442.

Followed by CIG & 159
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
And he has broken the lot of them!
He is brilliant at fault finding though.

No, I didn't break these locos or units: 08, 09, 33, 47, 73, 158, EPB, MLV, BIG, REP & TC or CAP.

You need to be good at fault diagnosis with the 444, 450 & 458's, they're actually quite simple if you just use a little reverse thinking & a little bit of talking to the tech's. ;)

TPE do have 1 former Central Trains 170 as well as the ones they got from SWT.

That is 170309, which was numbered 170399 when with Central. However, whilst this unit was built as a spot-hire unit by Porterbrook it was built to the same specs as 170301-308 for SWT, so it made sense that this unit ended up with TPE.

170392, that is now back with Southern, was built to the same specs as the Southern units despite operating with SWT.

No the 185s from South TransPennine are going on to the enhanced Manchester Airport to Scotland services from mid December which is a 2 hourly Manchester Airport to Edinburgh service through out the day plus 3 additional Glasgow trains per day which are portion workings between Manchester Airport and Preston with either a Barrow or Edinburgh service.

Ah...Didnt use the reading to brighton service as much then as i would do now...mainly becasue i just didnt have any reason to get to brighton at the time...whereas now, such a service would be pretty handy...

As for your your favourate of alll the SWT Units...442..couldnt agree more...they were very good units to move/drive...

Good news; can see this going hourly by the time the 350s are on this route, if not before

so how different are the Hull diagrams now that 170s are operating on South TPE?

Are there now more more than 2 x 185 operated services?

How did SWT and Central break them so often and yet FSR seem to have them running sweet as a nut.

Because Sarum's muppet fitters kept making alterations to their managements systems & air con.

I had 2x170 in FR yard one morning, 1x170 running, the other not, so I jumped out & started the other one, got the air systems charged up, necessary checks done, then coupled them up.

The one that had been running initially shut down & the one that I had just started kept going, so I uncoupled it & the other one restarted itself without any intervention! :o

Tried again & then the two out power cars shutdown & the two centre ones kept running, uncoupled again & everything started running again! :-x

This was all in front of a DSM, who thought I was buggering around, so I told him, well you ******* well have a go then, he tried & the two centre cars stopped & the two outer cars kept running... <(

Told yer I wasn't buggering around, didn't I, so he had another couple of goes & then admitted defeat. Train Cancelled.

I don't think the plan was to put more 185s on to Manchester-Hull, but to limit the amount of services that are or can be operated by pairs of 170, despite TPE saying they aim to have at least 3 cars on all services in the past.

I'll have to go and look at some of these diagrams and check the loadings. While a 185 can comfortably cope with the amount of passengers east of Doncaster normally, there are times when a 185 is pretty full in standard as far as Scunthorpe.

However, putting a pair of 170s on the 0928 from Cleethorpes on a Saturday (1010 from Scunthorpe) should be beneficial however, as a 185 is usually wedged leaving Scunthorpe
