Just wondering if anyone can help .

Intend to do Glasgow to Falkirk Grahamston then up to Dunblane then down to Edinburgh . Then back to Glasgow .

This is before it goes electric . Just wondering what combo of tickets would be best ? A return to Falkirk and a Edinburgh to Dunblane return?

That wouldn't cover you to get back to Falkirk from Edinburgh. Glasgow-Edinburgh plus Falkirk-Dunblane would be OK. There may be a cleverer option though.

Thanks . Is a Glasgow to Edinburgh valid via Falkirk Grahamston and Cumbernauld

The Scotrail journey-planner says that Glasgow-Cumbernauld-Falkirk Grahamstown-Edinburgh is fine on a £13 Glasgow-Edinburgh offpeak day return.

Or everything the OP wants to do would be covered by a £39 Central Scotland Rover valid for 3 days.

According to the guard on the trstr from Queen st to Falkirk , the ticket to Edinburgh is not valid . Let me away with it .

I wonder what their basis for saying that is!

Considering that from December there will be a direct service from Glasgow to Edinburgh via Cumbernauld & Falkirk G.
-------
Probably a confused guard because currently going via Cumbernauld & Falkirk G isn't the fastest way between Glasgow & Edinburgh

He said there's direct trains from Queen st to Edinburgh . Wonder if this is the case when the through services start in December?
That you're not on a through train where one is available is not a reason to claim a ticket is invalid (unless there were somehow a ticket valid only on through trains, which there isn't here!).

Yes. All mapped Permitted Routes between Glasgow Group and Edinburgh Group are shown on map EG. These are:
  1. Glasgow Group - Springburn - Falkirk Group - Edinburgh Group
  2. Glasgow Group - (Lenzie) - Falkirk Group - Edinburgh Group
  3. Glasgow Group - Bellgrove - Springburn - Falkirk Group - Edinburgh Group
  4. Glasgow Group - Bellgrove - (Bathgate) - Edinburgh Group
  5. Glasgow Group - Motherwell Group - Falkirk Group - Edinburgh Group
  6. Glasgow Group - Motherwell Group - (Shotts) - Edinburgh Group
  7. Glasgow Group - Motherwell Group - Carstairs - Edinburgh Group.
According to the guard on the trstr from Queen st to Falkirk , the ticket to Edinburgh is not valid.
The guard was incorrect. If your Glasgow Queen St - Cumbernauld - Falkirk Grahamston train leaves from the main train shed, it will follow Permitted Route 1 above. If it leaves from the lower suburban platforms, it will follow Permitted Route 3 above.

Via Cumbernauld is valid on an Edinburgh to Glasgow ticket. I also accept via Larbert whether it's valid or not as it is reasonable in my opinion.

This appears to allow Glasgow Group - (Newton or avoiding Newton) - Motherwell Group - Coatbridge Central - Cumbernauld - Falkirk Group - Edinburgh.

Yes. Edinburgh - Glasgow is valid via Larbert. The validity is derived from
National Routeing Guide - Instructions said:
If a single code is indicated the route is via any route on that map from the first routeing point to the final routeing point without doubling back.
This allows, for example, Glasgow Group - (Lenzie) - (Larbert) - Falkirk Group - Edinburgh Group.

That would presumably be possible using route 00001 (DIRECT) surely?

That route is no longer in use on any passenger flows. In any case, it is ambiguous what is meant (certainly just from what an old-style ticket would say on it, "DIRECT"). Does it mean that you just can't take non-circuitous permitted routes (whatever the definition of that is)? Does it mean you can only use the shortest route? Only a through train?

It is a very confusing routeing and so this is one kind of 'simplification' that I agree it was good to have abolished.
