I've not been involved in EU funding for many years, but back when I was, although it may have been publicised as being "for the south wales metro as a whole", the actual funding application would have been far more detailed
Who’s got time to look at details and facts when commenting on an open forum??

If anybody is interested in a sighting, 175107 is working between Llandudno and Manchester today

I'd love to see more Stadler's in the UK, not just at Greater Anglia or Wales.
They are building the new Merseyrail fleet and also the Glasgow Subway fleet also, so not just confined to Wales and Anglia.
They have also bid for the Tyne and Wear Metro contract.

I can't see the "Wales & Borders" text above the doors that the renders of the new stock in the original announcement had.
So far there's nothing but "Wales" everywhere in the new branding.

I would prefer to see more Wales and borders branding in some places like Shrewsbury or Chester .
new livery looks great on the 175s I'm going to miss them.

Does anyone know why there isn't any Wales & Borders branding on 175107? I thought this was a franchise requirement?

Perhaps because the new franchise doesn't start until Sunday?

I think what @DanNCL was getting at is that there is no mention of 'and borders' on what appears to be the finished livery. I also thought Mr Grayling and the DfT had insisted on that for trains operating in England, which 175s all do. A quick search doesn't come up with anything though.

Maybe Chris Grayling's vanity has been sated by picking the names for all of the franchises the DfT has let recently. The Agency Agreement 3 does include the following paragraph:

7. Welsh Ministers shall ensure that the Brand Guidelines developed with and issued to the Franchisee on trains, stations and for marketing material and publicity (excluding that for Wales-only services), shall recognise and demonstrate the cross-border nature of the Franchise and continue to comply with any licensing requirements regarding the use of trademarks licensed by the Secretary of State to Welsh Ministers.

It could be there to ensure any network maps show the border, for all I know.

Does it really matter though? We've had 15 years of 'Arriva Trains Wales' with no mention of borders anywhere in the branding and the sky hasn't fallen in.
In reality it's only petty politicians on the border who care whether their train turns up saying 'Transport for Wales' or 'Transport for Wales & Borders'

It's no big deal, for heaven's sake. There is no reference to Wales in Great Western's title to Wales.

Though there's no reference to England either. There was some fuss about the lack of Welsh language on board I seem to recall.

Can someone explain to me why the taff vale is getting trams where more people live and there are 3 valleys compared to .rhymney getting flirts on one valley? so unfair

Isn't it because the Rhymney Valley has to remain as heavy rail due to coal trains out of Cwmbargoed having to use it.

Well, 'worse' is a bit of an ambiguous term. In terms of passenger comfort I imagine yes the Flirts will offer a superior experience, but that's by design. I'm not aware of the Tram-Train units being used on any particularly long routes? Either will probably be a vast improvement on Pacers...

They aren't really trams at all they are more like trains as ken stakes said.

Other than being high floor, so more like a longer Metrolink tram.

To some extent probably quite a bit Swiss-narrow-gauge-esque as a whole.
So why didn't they give the whole metro flirts and dis benefit the taff vale?

Tram-trains are required because of the little bit of tramway being built in the Bay. They will also facilitate extensions in the Valleys in the future (we're told). Rhymney Valley trains will go the Vale, not the Bay.

Won't they be worse for passengers though?

I don't think we know much about what they'll be like yet, except that the tram-trains won't have toilets. I'm not going to speculate or repeat previous discussions.

Mentions new stations at London square and Cardiff bay......first time I’ve seen no mention of flourish! Does that mean they’ve decided to go with bay instead of flourish?
Also note it’s says additional capacity on valley lines with refurbished trains in 2019-previously 769 were specifically mentioned rather than general refurbished trains!
Difference in working could mean nothing....but still interesting

I've been told that anecdotally (as reported elsewhere) so I think it's safe to say that's the plan.

TfW will be getting 150s and 153s next year (which presumably will be refurbished from day 1), I'm also sure that one 150 is off for PRM mods at the moment.

Last I heard was 769s would be arriving next April (12 months later than planned) so it's probably safer just to mention refurbished trains in general than specify a type.
