commute Manchester to Liverpool: how much does it cost?

Hi there,

I am a post-graduate student in Liverpool looking to move to Manchester. I have an 18-25 rail card and will probably need to travel 4 days a week to arrive in Liverpool about 10am (but sometimes more flexible working hours).

What is the cheapest way for me to do this? How much is it going to cost me monthly?

If you only travel 4 days per week, your cheapest option would be to buy daily tickets. £14.00 undiscounted, or £12.00 with a railcard discount (a £12 minimum fare applies Mondays-Fridays for journeys starting before 10am. After 10am and at weekends you'd pay about £9.20 return)

Season tickets cannot be discounted with your railcard so you'd look to pay £60.10 per week or £230.80 per month.

Is the journey wholly from a central Liverpool station to a central Manchester station, or is there a local train, bus, tram or ferry at one end or the other?

A Preston to Liverpool season is permitted for travel from Manchester.
I don't know how much hassle this would be, 'cos it's an odd route, and they could change it in future so I wouldn't risk buying an annual!

If 09:48 is ok to arrive into Lime Street, then a Freedom of the North West 4 in 8 day Rover is £37.60 (only valid after 08:45 on Mon-Fri)

If this were changed, it wouldn't affect tickets purchased before the date of the change. The contract is made at a particular point in time, probably when the money changes hands. After that point, the contract cannot be changed by one party without the consent of the other party.

This is one of my principal complaints about the current administration of the Routeing Guide. There is inadequate issue control. New versions appear without prior consultation, without notice and purport to be effective from the instant they appear on the web, the only available source. There is no public access to historical versions of the guide, many of which are still in use because tickets purchased during their period of operation remain valid for travel.

This must change. If the current administrators of the Guide can't or won't meet the minimum standard of effectiveness, then the DfT have two choices. They can find a body which will administer the Guide effectively. Or they can do it themselves.
