Ideas for interior refresh / refurbishment of Pendolinos

Acually dont mind the new scheme on the 390s , looks more modern . Though i do wish they would do a full interior refresh . With plug sockets throughout , free wifi and decent catering in the shop .

No interior upgrade going to happen until the new WCP franchise winner takes over from September 2019 at the earliest.

Wonder whether, when an interior upgrade eventually does come, whether it will include new seats? Perhaps the type used in the mk4s and LNER/XC HSTs?

Unlikely, they'll probably have the seat backs and arm rests re-painted and the seat cushions reupholstered, maybe new filling.

New seats would cost a fortune for no real benefit (latest standards limit the amount of foam so has an effect on comfort)

Ahh ok. Would the seat type used in mk4s pass standards for new seats now? I know there's a proper name for that model of seat. The other well rated seat is the type in the GWR HSTs, also has a specific name..?

The latter is the Grammer IC3000. I believe it is still possible to use it in new builds but it is quite expensive and quite heavy.

I'm always more than satisfied with the catering offer at the shop. Interiors though are beginning to look rather tired indeed. Plans in hand for the wifi but fitting plugs is a massive task & will happen no time soon.

I think we all agree the interiors of both Class 221s and 390s are tired and they need a refit which i'm sure would have happened if the the last franchise change would have been won outright! Talking six years back now. Unfortunately were going to have to wait and see.

As far as the shop is concerned, it's at least great to know we still have one and not a bad selection for the room available.

First class catering, a shop and a trolley service. Better than most, but i am biased.

By then, those types of seats may not conform to the safety specifications, and will look quite dated by then. I'd predict something higher backed and thinner, perhaps alike the Grammer IC3000 seating, only more rounded to reflect the curve theme.

How do you know?
The only reason why they weren't fitted to the IETs was because of the DfTs cheap specification.
Anyway the first class 800 seats show be fitted in standard IMO

I've had a search on here but can't really find anything but is there a thread on which we can find Photo's and diagrams of the different type of seats (eg Grammer IC3000) which are available for the TOCs & Rolling Stock Manufactures to use in there trains.

They are just names and numbers to me unless you actually know what type they are.

If there is no thread could we start one?

I never said I know, I said that they may not conform, depending on when the refurbishment takes place.

Somewhere in the Northern Refurbishments thread, someone explained all of the seat types, but it would be quite a way up the thread now.

Once they have an idea on what sort of scheme the HS2 rolling stock delivers, I would expect them to follow that if the WCP does what it says on the tin.

I wonder how many bits of folded up magazine they will pull out of these things when they do finally spruce the interiors up? I've added my fair share over the years when a rattle has gotten annoying, and I've seen loads of other passengers do it too.

Re-aligning the seats to windows in standard would be nice. Always marvelled at the stupidity of placement when some of the luggage racks get better views than some passengers.

There's nothing wrong with the interiors that a refurbishment would fix. They've dated remarkably well. There's zero chance of window aligned seating, just as there wasn't in mk3s, other than the Grand Central coaches with original second class seats mounted at first class position.

A different seat type would still have to be missing a window armrest and window seats would still be annoying if you didn't grab one with enough of a window ledge to use as an armrest.

Personally I don't care about WiFi - I imagine most people don't. The fewer people TAP-TAP-tapping away the better.

Interestingly, it seems that originally VT wanted to fit the Class 390 fleet with the fantastic Grammer ICE3000 seats, as found on the DB ICE 1/ICE 3/ICE T.

At Railtex Grammer was seeking feedback on a seat design it had developed for a bid to fit the Pendolino trains now under construction for Britain's West Coast Main Line. For inter-city trains, it would like to offer the seats fitted to the ICE3 and ICT trains in Germany, but may be unable to do so because of DB licence provisions.

That's great, thanks. Had a quick look in Northern Refurb thread but there's 135 pages so need more time to look.
Could do with some sort of sticky for quick reference of such things!

What is clear is comfort is NOT a top consideration for most TOCs new rolling stock fleets and anything procured by government is worst of all. In my view anyway!

The ICE 3000 is a different seat from that one (Grammer's seats are mostly something-3000, it's the bit before the 3000 that differentiates), the same one as the ICE in Germany has.

TBH I don't think the existing seats are bad at all (I don't think I ever heard anyone complain about them other than on here, and even then very rarely) and think that a re-powder-coat of the metal parts and new cushions and covers should be just fine.

Yes, I'm sure a better interior arrangement would be possible given a bit of effort. After all that's what's been done several times with the Mk3 coaches (I'll let others decide whether the results were an improvement or not...)
