I bought a return to Balloch today. The ticket printed out showing the origin/destination as Balloch Central, a station which hasn't existed since 1988. Are there any other examples of things like this?

I take it you don't want answers like London Terminals or Swindon (Wilts)?

I don't normally book through tickets from local stations to Eurostar destinations but once that I did, I had a ticket from Birmingham to London International. I got to Waterloo OK by Virgin and London Underground.

I *think* some day rangers can still get issued as "Lostock Parkway"

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
I think there is Glenrothes with Thornton that is simply issued as "Glenrothes".

Gobowen for Oswestry is issued as "Gobowen", similar to Hanwell & Elthorne is issued to "Hanwell", although as both are former or present Great Western Railway stations, there was a common theme of the second part (mostly) of the name getting dropped in the 1970s.

Unsure if tickets print out "Barnsley Interchange" and "Meadowhall Interchange" (both in the South Yorkshire PTE area) or whether the the plain "Barnsley" and "Meadowhall" respectively.

Both issue as Barnsley, although Rotherham Central issues as such still. Staying in South Yorskhire, Swinton issues as Swinton (S. Yorks) to avoid confusion with Swinton in Manchester, and I believe Chapeltown does the same to avoid issue with Chapelton.

There are many stations around the country that have a suffix for printing on tickets in order to avoid confusion with other similarly names stations - examples near to me would be Harlington (Beds) and Hatfield (Herts).

Deansgate G-Mex, although as it's part of the Manchester group you only see it on seat reservations.

OT, but I always loved the name G-Mex as a Metrolink stop. Sounded so futuristic...was a little sad when it got renamed...

Not just there. There are some ticket which are available to or from Deansgate as well as Manchester Stations. Some cost a bit more than the Manchester version (such as a season ticket between Deansgate and Bache), some cost a bit less (such as a return from Deansgate to Knighton), but they're mostly the same price.

As for the question in the thread title (sorry, I don't know if there's a historical reason):

A ticket to Penyffordd is valid to a station called Pen-y-ffordd on the signs.
A ticket to Llanfairpwll is valid to a station called something else.

The station is called Llanfairpwll, it just serves a settlement of rather different name and has that on the sign.

Also, any ticket issued to X Bus isn't valid to the station that is on the ticket, a ticket to MINEHEAD BUS (XBW) is only valid as far as Taunton, though from Taunton it is routed ANY TRAIN (00018)m despite at that point being bus only!

There is Birmingham International which is the station for the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham Airport. The Airport dropped international from its name many years ago. The planned HS2 station nearby will be called Birmingham Interchange

There is also in Birmingham the station called University (code UNI) although I believe the tickets now University (Birmingham).

Presumably to avoid confusion with SailRail tickets to University station in Northern Ireland.

...and probably every other University in the UK!

That makes we wonder if there has ever been a proposal for a fixed price ticket to Your University for the first week of term. Encouraging students to take the train even if it is long distance. Valid only with your student ID card.

Except that in many cases (certainly in the case of Sheffield, my university) you don't receive your student ID card until after you've arrived.

I notice that the ORR refer to Bordesley as 'Birmingham Bordesley' so I would be interested to know what it would say on a ticket.

When I have bought Bristol Freedom Travelpasses from the guard before, the issuing station is shown as 'Gloucester DS'

Pre-1991 avoided confusion with Radcliffe (Manchester), of course.
And also to avoid confusion with the village of Ratcliffe on Soar in Nottinghamshire (now the location of East Midlands Parkway) - the number of times you hear mention of Radcliffe Power Station in the Media - it's Ratcliffe Power Station!

The STAR Mobile machines now used by GWR show on such tickets and rovers the base location of the machine as the issuing point. The previous Avantix machines just used to leave the origin as blank if the machine was roving (ie on train use) and not kept permanently at a specific station.

The BR Fares site is useful to show what is printed on a ticket. Enter your stations and press the query fares button. The response will show both the four digit National Location Code and the station name as printed on tickets when limited to 16 characters as per the old APTIS style format.

Simply "Bordesley".

I was surprised one evening standing on Kidderminster station to hear the announcement and see the display say Bordesley as one of the calling points. Normally Bordesley has only one train per week. I realised that there must be a football match on at St Andrews that evening. At some time in the future, Borsesley will be served by the West Midlands Metro and be covered by the 'City Hop' fare as it is within the Middle Ring Road.

My friends at school in the late 1950s used to tell me that a child's single from Snow Hill to Bordesley at 1 1/2d was a better deal than a 2d platform ticket but that was no use to me as I used to get a train in the opposite direction.

Although if you read some of the plans, Bordesley will be closed to allow for new chords to be built from the Camp Hill line towards Moor Street.

I suspect usage of Bordesley is somehow inflated by some dodgy characters buying tickets there for the sole purpose of entering Snow Hill/Moor Street when the barriers are in operation (likewise for Five Ways at New Street, Edge Hill at Lime Street, Ardwick in future for Piccadilly)
