Connington ECML OHLE Headspan conversions

Any news with further conversions?
From a run down earlier this month, it looks like more spans have been converted than at Christmas - but are still at the middle 'hybrid' stage. I wonder if NR are going to take them all the way and are waiting for another long blockage, or are happy with extra horizontal support.

Just gone through Conington now on 1A25: I counted 17 portal booms having gone up on the headspan masts. As of yet, they are all still supporting the wires as a headspan would (i.e. no independent SPS has yet been added).

13 at my last count (June/July), so they're still working in this area. (I guess it's also possible I missed one...)

According to a VTEC train manager who spotted me counting them, they need a full line closure to do conversion - which means X-mas/boxing day this year most likely (I had already been told this). HOWEVER, I was told something new too. According to this crew-member, NR is quite happy with the compromise conversions and may leave them as is till the area is more pressing. N.B. the last discussion I had with anyone from NR about this was a complete fluke in about Feb...

No idea if it's related to that work but the first 2 weekends of January 2019 will see ECML services diverted via Cambridge all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

I also recently noticed a pile of booms in a field adjacent to the railway (on the eastern side); this might be an indication that further "portalisation" is imminent.

The booms in question have been sat there since December. There has been no change to the OHLE structures at Connington as far as I’m aware since the currently affixed ones were put up at that time.

Well I’m going to eat my hat now. There has been activity at connington! There are a number of road rail vehicles parked where the cross members have been placed for some months.

Further to this some new arms have appeared on at least one portal toward the north end of the site. They are currently secured above the cross beam. It would appear that they are finally progressing with the independent supports for each running line.

Counted another two portals being similarly adorned this morning, bringing the total to about 3.

Yes, I saw dangly bits on at least one a few days ago, but it didn't look to me like any had been fully converted?

A photo would be nice :P

@jyte, ask and you shall receive! Granted, it's not the best image in the world, but here's an example of one of the "bedanglied" portals taken today. They seem to have straight "stovepipes" going above the boom, and "kinked" stovepipes going below it; as to their individual purpose, that's anyone's guess! IMG_2336.jpg

I still counted 17 portals up when I passed later on the train.

Aah, I thought you meant they were now fully independently registered - ATF maybe?
Not sure on that; the Return Conductors already appear to have been converted to Aerial Earth Wires. I suspect they may be for the registration arms themselves.

Aah, if you look at ones in the difference it's got two pairs of SPS - maybe they're just converting the fast lines?

From a ride earlier today it looks like the first headspan in the down direction has been fully converted and looked like the trial boom at Potters Bar. I am making the return on Tuesday so will update then when I have a better view....

I suspect that putting the portal in place and hanging everything from that is a marked improvement in the event of dewirement as the other wires being supported by the fixed portal frame won't move nearly as much as when they were supported from the headspan wire.

That's kinda the point. :)

Plus it's required to allow 140mph running in the future since without independent registration the constructive interference between the standing* waves set up by two trains running in opposite directions will do bad things. Very bad things.

*WRT to the trains, the wave will move along the wire from the viewpoint of a stationary observer.

Sorry, meant just hanging the vertical suspension wire off the portal, would improve things without putting up new stovepipes as well.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, it would be an improvement though not as much as fully independent registration.

A down earlier today confirmed the following -

At least a two dozen headspans are in the process of being converted or have been. At least 5 have been fully converted using two different registration styles. Some are like the trial boom at potters bar, and others are more like the mk3 high-speed system used on the WCML.

I have attached a photo - quite difficult to take at 125mph!

I also observed a lot of portal steelworks lying around at the side of the track - looks like at least two more headspans are due for conversion.

Update as of 16/2/19: At least 20 headspans are now fully converted. Around 15 have the boom but no independent registrations.

It is a fairly strange registration arrangement; I suspect the ones with pulleys replace the headspan arrangements with pulleys.
Note that the angled pulley over the 6-foot supports a tail wire for a Balance Weight - AFAIK there's no plan to improve the tensioning arrangements.

Just did a run down now, counted 26 fully converted. At least 12 half way through the process.

I wonder how many booms they are intending to do in total?

Again, the provision of installing new structures was rejected and a detailed analysis of the possibility of reusing the existing support masts was undertaken.

Using Arup’s well-developed tools for assessing geotechnical issues and ground conditions, a close study of the foundations was made, to discover whether they would cope with the varied stresses and loads from the new portal geometries.

Point cloud surveys of the existing structures were undertaken.
Economy would best be achieved by the reuse of the existing masts, but these would have been installed in a manner that facilitated the cross-track wires. Using point cloud surveys, the precise positions of the masts had to be recorded, along with any skew or twist as had been seen at Paddington, which would have an impact on the loading of the finished portal.

Ground engineering studies of the foundations were essential as the original foundations would have been installed to take cross-track stress rather than the new loadings imposed by the beams. This involved a detailed structural analysis to determine the existing foundation loads and compare them with proposed portal loads. Arup’s proprietary software was used both to model the new loads imposed on the foundations and to check the stresses in the Series 1 boom and connection angle to the masts due to the loads of the UK1 OLE, a design first used on the West Coast main line for higher train speeds, and the OLEMI (OLE Master Index) equipment which continued to support the OLE in the conversion.

In summary, the emphasis was on the strength of the concrete, reinforcing bar cover and the general suitability of the foundation for the portal conversion. However, without the cross wires, the bending stress on the vertical structures is reduced. In all cases, the foundations at Connington were side-bearing concrete – no piles were involved.

Following these initial design considerations, a detailed design for thirty structures was prepared, covering this high-risk area on the East Coast main line. Performance aspirations would suggest that all headspans in a tension length should be changed, but the complexity of replacing items such as mid-point anchors and neutral-section supports drove the decision to convert only the simpler, multitrack headspans within the tension length. Mid-point anchors, booster transformer structures, and switching structures were among some of the structures deemed too complex for this phase of the headspan-to-portal conversion projects.

Installing the Portal booms

Many design and construction meetings were held with the Network Rail’s works delivery team, accompanied by drawing revisions, such as extra dimensions, to suit the construction team’s needs on site. Installation was carried out on site by Works Delivery, acting as principal contractor. Design acceptance was similarly eased by working with the E&P (electrification and plant) and structures route asset managers, and the crane provider was brought in at an early stage.

Staging of the work was very important, particularly on such a heavily used route. The design, therefore, detailed all of the stages of the conversion process, not just the finished result, taking into account the analysis of both mast and boom orientation, the detailed construction methodology and a view of simple versus complex structure types.

First, after the headspan wire was removed, the new boom was landed on the two main steel masts, with the two cross wires retained. After this interim stage, the SPS was modified, in a staged process, to fit in with site availability and line possessions.

Lifting in the new boom was a complex procedure, each one weighed in excess of a tonne and had to be manipulated into the final position with existing wires in situ, but, once it was in place, the processes became more self-contained. An initial stage-by-stage approach could have led to one road being upgraded at a time, but Jonathan Ridley pointed out that, in practice, all four roads were completed at once.

If an incident occurs, damage is now usually limited to the single track involved and the equipment can be returned to normal operating condition in less time than if the failure occurred on a headspan structure.

With the conversion of 30 headspans completed, Arup can look to the future. The next step is to convert a complete tension length, including all of the complex structures that were left out in this conversion project. Further evaluation of the complex structures will be required as part of a new feasibility study and the performance improvement gain is expected to be considerable.
