Question on this station.

I might have to visit one of the businesses on Xton Business Park (don't like that name) which is to the south of the station. Looking at Network Rail site and Google maps, am I right in thinking that there isn't a southerly exit on this station, so to get to anywhere to the south of the station, I've got a long walk ahead of me?

I had a look with Street View and on the south side, a long brick wall was only interrupted with what looked like a pill box machine gun post! A bit like the Berlin Wall once was. :)

Surely it's only a hundred metres or so extra over the road bridge?

Edit - whoops, no access to road bridge, I see now. You need local knowledge. Sorry. :(

Cheers Howard. Not every day you see a machine gun post on an industrial estate. Mind you, there's some places around here that could use one (and some land mines)!

Isn't the site to the south (on one side at least) a former ordnance factory? So talk of landmines and such isn't so wide of the mark!

Well Stop Line No.14 (the leeds liverpool canal) is not a million miles away. Though i believe they only built the pillboxes and block houses between liverpool and wigan.

There is currently no exit on that side. You need to exit through the booking hall. If you then turn left and walk across the car park there is a pedestrian exit gate at the far side of the car park onto a path that takes you through a small park with kids play area leading to the road bridge. Cross over the road bridge and turn left. I would estimate a 10 to 15 minute walk to the business park.

Are there stairs up to the road bridge? I couldn't see any on Google. Oh. I see, you have to walk right back.

There are 2 photos at the station near the foot of this page:

Looking at the photo of the Class 66 (looking towards Leyland & Preston), you can see the overbridge in the distance, with a road embankment leading to the bridge. Access to the embankment is off the photo, some distance to the right, so you are initially heading away from the bridge. Once you reach the embankment, head back towards the bridge, cross the railway and turn left at the road junction. Just hope it is not a rainy day - there is very little shelter, and you will get very wet....

Definitely some evidence of people scrambling up and down the road bridge embankment to save about 400m on the route. Typically cr@p pedestrian route design in modern industrial areas.
