This is when things will get interesting. Peak time for Xmas market goers and shoppers could really start turning public opinion against the RMT.
I said something similar a few pages back. In fact I've been saying it for a while. The RMT needs public opinion on it's side because it'll give them a bigger clout with Northern. But the RMT seem to have gone down the all guns blazing, shoot first, ask questions later approach.

I have no idea what you mean by "pure DOO" but DOO means "Driver Only Operation".

It makes no reference to the presence, or otherwise, of staff on the train. It means what it says; nothing more and nothing less, and cannot really be considered to be "pure" or "impure".

DOO is no more or less "pure" if there are other staff on the train who are not part of the operation of the train!

(I've not been following this thread, but this was brought to my attention!)
The thing is I don't think it's DOO but DCO.

In effect, we are now on a 3 day week till further notice. Or a 25% reduction in salary. Pay rise is on hold until dispute is sorted.

Is it?

Our Annual pay award is in no way connected to the ongoing dispute, thought you’d know that.

2018 Pay award has actually been agreed just this morning subject to EC sign off.

DOO - driver only operation (passenger) or (non-passenger) was always a rulebook term that meant the driver was responsibility for all on board operational duties and you may have an additional member of staff (for example a Scottish ticket examiner or a passenger host on the Ely to Kings Lynn line) or equally may not.

DCO - driver controlled operation - has only started to be thrown about over the last few years in an attempt to make it clear that the driver may not be the only person on board. The train is still operated as a DOO-P service.

The in between service is South Eastern high speed where the train is not permitted to operate without an on board manager despite the driver conducting the operational duties. I would personally rather they called this method of operation DCO rather than muddying the waters by calling effectively DOO-P services DCO when the member of staff is determined as 'jolly lovely to have' but the train operator is adamant they want to be able to not have one on board regardless.

There really should be 3 terms:

1) DOO (when there is never a guard or OBS rostered)
2) DOO+ (DOO when there is OBS rostered for every service but not required to run them)
3) DCO (driver opens and closes doors but compulsory to have an OBS/Guard/Train Manager to run service)

With Merseyrail joining SouthEastern HS by switching to 3) it does muddy the waters further and could be adopted elsewhere.

That does make some sense; there are three main scenarios and they suit different occasions. I don't object to what you term DCO for Northern though I think driver release, guard close is probably better; I don't think the others would be suitable due to the situation with ticketing and with disabled accessibility.

Driver open, guard close is not DOO though and Northern are required to introduce DCO. However I do agree that Guard open and close is extremely old fashioned and unnecessary especially since it has been on operation on Southern (prior DCO) and Kent. DCO seems to work well, on Southern no cover is extremely well since they increased the headcount and from the flexibility that on board staff can work all routes. Accessibility is also not a problem as the OBS is required to check every platform.

Use all the semantics you want . If the train runs under sole operational control of the driver and can run without the second member of staff then the parts of the rulebook that are relevant are ones for DOO-P .

Indeed a point I made to him pages back and he never bothered responding . S/He Has absolutely no idea what they are going on about and has spent too much time listening to the table banging mess room lawyers who never actually know anything anyway .

Driver Open, Guard Close is a sensible system of operation, as the guard can finish their transaction without a big rush to reach the doors (although I guess with more TVMs popping up across the network, the amount of on-board sales in theory should decrease). Shame the last couple press releases from the RMT state that it's their policy for the guards to control the doors and won't change.

I’m not even sure they are actually train crew, as you say their lack of knowledge about the job is shocking.

Everyone working for Northern knew our pay talks resumed this week.

I believe Northern will have to have an OBS on their services. So no "can run". Technically they can but officially they cannot.

Even more so if it continues in December.
To be fair, last year during the Christmas Shopping period, the service was so poor that a strike might actually improve the perception of the company if people abandon the railway.

Pay talks - you're having a laugh surely! When I worked for the railway if there was any industrial action on, all pay talks/awards were put on hold till the dispute was settled - and that even included the pay talks for groups of workers not involved in the dispute!

I doubt that the Unions other than RMT, which are not in dispute, would tolerate this? There are a lot of staff at Northern who are in Unions other than RMT. If Northern were to insist on keeping these talks on hold they would likely find themselves in dispute with all of the Unions.

Not sure what you mean by that. The biggest issues in the run up to Christmas I can remember have been insufficient capacity on services opposed to services being cancelled. If Northern try to run a reduced service, even if all services are doubled up, they'll be chaos.

That's exactly the problem. So if Northern advise people not to travel by rail, people should really take that advice seriously. I expect the timetable that's offered could be reduced even further too. The chaos of people being left behind by full trains causes reputational damage. No trains or no travellers = no people caught up in said chaos.

That's a quick way of turning one dispute into 3.

Pay deal was separate, as any member of staff would of known.

Everyone meekly not turning up and abandoning the railways is hardly going to prompt any of the protagonists to change their course.

If the RMT were to end up in a dispute with all the other unions, would they go out on strike.........

What makes you believe that Northern wish to introduce a model like with an OBS as a necessity so the train can run ?

That's exactly the problem. So if Northern advise people not to travel by rail, people should really take that advice seriously. The problem is you can tell passengers not to rely on the train all you want , but as I said in relation to the EMT services a few pages back people always assume that not to travel advice is for everyone else but themselves . If Northern issue not to travel advice but then a timetable for services its pretty much nailed on that there will be chaos. But if they dont run any services they will also get negative press . I think in that sense they cannot win either way .

Also I suspect by the time of the markets any strike day service will be further thinned out because of Bolton electrification works being complete

I'm certainly not going to be making a decision not to go anywhere just because the railway industry can't get its act together and provide the service its paid to provide.

It's certainly an increasing consensus in this thread. Tread carefully though, anyone suggesting such a thing is just jealous of them working on the railway.

It has been made clear that passengers using those services have not been given advice not to travel, or even really informed of disruption. Many will have been sold an Advance ticket long after the strike was announced.

EMT are providing their normal booked services so it is not really for them to take the lead.

If there are no trains, you will not be using the trains.

Given that last year there were a large number of people who could not physically board trains due to the numbers traveling on December weekends, if people are asked not to travel and then find an alternative, they will be less disappointed resulting in less bad press. If final trains are leaving Manchester at 1700 and Northern have run a timetable earlier in the day which has brought people into the city centre, they will expect to get home. What are they going to do when hundreds and hundreds of people are left behind by the last train and the station is overcrowded?

I will, however be using any trains or alternative routes that are available to go about my business.

I don't see why the protagonists in this dispute should be enabled to get away with not providing the service, without garnering bad publicity.

I appreciate that , but some of those passengers would have undoubtedly been displaced passengers from Northern who had been given advice about the expected disruption , that incident that made the news occurred about an hour and a half after the last Northern service for the day .

Given that last year there were a large number of people who could not physically board trains due to the numbers traveling on December weekends, if people are asked not to travel and then find an alternative, they will be less disappointed resulting in less bad press. I appreciate the situation last year , I was working during it . Weekends in december present a significant operational challenge with a full service . With a reduced service it is just a recipe for disaster .

But as I said Northern wont be able to win either way if there are strikes on saturday in late November and december . If they run a limited service in the day as you said people will expect to come home by train no matter how many times they are told the last trains are earlier than usual and of course some people will time their day out so they can get that last train . If they dont offer any service then they will get bad press for not running anything at all despite being able to do so on previous days of industrial action . There seems to be more interest from the local press around the railway now following the chaos following the May timetable change so I doubt not running any service would pass without comment .

But that's the whole point I'm making. Most people will use a bus or their car to complete their journey instead. It's the opposite of what we want, as supporters of the railway, but it's the only real alternative.

Yet if Northern have an emergency timetable with 5 return workings there's a chance many Christmas shoppers will time their shopping around those services and the problem will be even worse. Even if Northern advise essential travel only I wouldn't be surprised if some people thought one shopping trip to Manchester/Liverpool/Leeds etc. on a pre-Christmas Saturday was essential. If Northern run no services at all then many people who are supposed to be working in the shops will be stuck at home unable to get to work.

I would expect most people who have access to a car are already using it in preference to the trains anyway. Those left travelling by train must have few alternatives available to them (or are members of this forum !).
