Before the registrations were taken over by DVLA, I understand that the LCC later GLC was the default registration authority.

I had wondered for sometime what area the T was for under the current scheme. I have also seen a J which I understand was only issued by the DVLA under special circumstances.

My new car I am pleased to say has a VA registration as I went out of Birmingham to buy the car. I would not have been happy with a BF reg. which I have seen so many times over the years since the present system came in.

Jx plates appear to be available to purchase, so perhaps they've just allowed the entire sequence to be used for cherished/vanity plates.

BR16GER was a surprise I spotted in Bamber Bridge. A 'Brigger' being a person from Bamber Bridge.

Interestingly that website indicates that the plate FA13 CKU is available, which is rather close to something quite rude.

I can remember a story on how someone in South Australia registered his car as Oh S*** backwards.
Took a while before the authority over there realized and ordered them to be changed.

As I understand the M registrations the first half of the alphabet is Merseyside and the second half is Manchester so if MU is ever issued it would be in Manchester and that would upset half of that city.

Not all letter combinations are used but I did think that you could claim to live in Monte Carlo as I think MC is the international code for Monaco.

More new registrations in 2007 perhaps? I dont see many T reg ones to be fair but i did notice a car that was on Greek plates that now sports a TN 07 reg .

S is for scotland and Sa to Sj is west of scotland Glasgow . SL to SN is Edinburgh . SP is Fife SR st perth Dundee . Then sv and sw Aberdeen etc . SX and Sy are highlands and islands

National Express West Midlands have Alexander Dennis with SN67 registrations. This could mean that the actual owner of the vehicles is a finance company based in Edinburgh.

I think part of the reason is there is little point these days in registering locally... in the good old days of abc123x and x321cba then registering locally meant being able to get blocks of numbers that could match the intended fleet numbers... certainly United Counties practised this... but what's the point nowadays? so when buying/ leasing companies now say to the manufacturer... you register it

TN07 was a one off issue for Edinburgh in lieu of SN07 as DVLA deemed SN07 looked like Snot.

Operators can specify local registrations, all of the new ADL stuff with first in Cornwall has WK prefixes, likewise all of Plymouth citybus new stuff has Devon (Exeter) registrations,

I know that Durham was VK. I still see the VK in the new system too and still wonder if it is still the case.

VK was actually a Newcastle designator, amongst others for Newcastle.

Durham was UP, PT and GR.

In the area, Middlesbrough was (at least) VN, HN, PY, DC and AJ, as it goes.

Quite correct that VK was a Newcastle registration (along with ones like NL) though Northern General would have had quite a few with VK plates working in Co Durham. In fact, Northern General registered using both Newcastle and Durham licensing offices.

You're right on the Durham plates too, though Darlington was HN - hence why every new United bus (whose head office was in the town) up to 1974 had an HN plate.
