Having seen a mock up of a Voyager wearing the livery, I can confirm there will be no blue, purely black on the front including the Virgin badge, and surprisingly a lot of pink.

Pink? Is that due to it being a prototype repaint applicable to the XC franchise as well?

Where will the pink be?

If we were to just image the Pendolino repaint on the Voyager, with a black front, a Vinyl shield on the front and a silk ribbon, would we be very nearly there?

I apologise. Red, not pink. A lot of red, near the front.

For those saying it needed updating I don’t necessarily disagree - but usually the reason for updating is to create something better!

The flapping tarpaulin or whatever it is called looks bloody awful - not just the design but the application too.

The design doesn’t work with the vehicle and the vinyl is badly specified - look at one after a few weeks and the vinyl goes a really matt dirty faded colour.

I know the DfT told VT how to paint them, but that doesn’t excuse the awful lack of design standards on the Virgin part!

I think the paint was designated by the ROSCO with interference from the DfT, nothing to do with VT.
The vinyls on the other hand were down to Virgin and they were trying to tie West Coast in with East Coast services where the vinyls on Class 800 suited but that doesn't matter anymore so we are left with WC only with a halfway house design but all will change September next year one way or other!!

Perhaps glossy type vinyl would have looked better. LNR have now switched to glossy vinyl after changing from Matt on the first prototype.

Also, makes you wonder whether the red is bleached and worn quickly by the sun. Remember old red Rover 214s? Faded terrible.

Is this the first loco class that has had yellow fronts but will drop them?
I can't think of anything else that is planned to receive a lighting upgrade to enable it to get rid of the yellow fronts.

No that will be the 68s to used for Transpennine services. Voyagers and Pendolinos are units not locos!

I'd be quite funny actually seeing a Voyager without a yellow front should what's being claimed ever come to light (no pun intended). I do think if Virgin want to roll with their new flowing silk livery though that the Pendolino should have had the same treatment. Imagine if you just had a white front or replaced the yellow with red?

Yeah, I get told off elsewhere for calling locos "trains" or "units" - they're all inter changeable now (and it seems you understood anyway...)

Found this:
Beacon the new (ish) owners of the voyagers have some modernisation plans for the voyagers. They have teamed up with us to showcase these works on one of our voyagers. 221101 is going into Ilford for a repaint. It will also get some minor interior rework. Repainting the vestibules. There are other mods planned for later in the year and we'll be able to reveal more as these get finalised.

Also of note about the Pendolinos:
Any significant interior refurbishment of the fleet is going to be very expensive (£50-100M), so there’s no payback period for Virgin at this stage of the current franchise and possible direct award period. The interior environment is important but refurbishing it can’t be justified until we have a longer term franchise commitment such as West Coast Partnership (WCP).

The repaint facility isn’t geared up for interior refurbishment anyway – in fact the two conflict with each other. Interior refurbishments would require a second set to be stood down, which can’t be sustained with the current fleet.

If we decided to go ahead with an interior refurbishment, it would take at least a year to sort out (agreeing a spec, gaining commercial agreement, doing the engineering, getting long lead time material delivered)
This would not align in any way with the repaint programme and wouldn’t be effective this side of the franchise. This doesn’t mean we’re not doing anything at all about interiors until we win the West Coast Partnership.
In 2015, we did a deep clean and repair of aesthetic defects. Following this, the K exam was developed in which each train is stood down at Oxley Depot for 2 days every 6 months specifically focused on clearing customer facing defects. We’re working with Alstom to improve the quality further by much better integration of the current heavy cleaning and K exam activities.

What’s happening with carpets?

It’s recognised that the saloon carpet life is well advanced but to replace would be a significant investment (£2-3M). We are developing plans for the next couple of years in which we intend to include replacement of vestibule carpets, which will help to protect saloon carpets by removing dirt before customers even enter the saloon area. Replacing vestibule carpets will also reduce the smells outside toilets.

No preview photos internally though and unless @TT-ONR-NRN wishes to show any, no point in saying anything IMO.

It's not like they're too sure of themselves is it!?

I did kind of wonder why Virgin chose to copy the livery of a TOC with the same branding but was pretty much ran by Stagecoach while still saying they wished to make it look like one of theirs. At least that last part is what I've heard. Probably not helped by the fact Stagecoach is gonna be the majority shareholder in West Coast Partnership either. Either way, sooner or later your profile picture is going to kind of show a thing of the past when the new livery is completely rolled out. I'd keep hold of it if I were you. ;)

So we've had all this huffing and puffing over a livery that is going to last no longer than 16 months?

I am nostalgic so i'll keep that profile pic! :D

I would hope Virgin carry on with the WCP in the future and if they do i just don't think it will have the same Virgin feel of the past, good or bad whatever your preference and plenty passengers have loved the Virgin difference over the years.

But the base coat is there for whoever's TOCs Vinyls going forward and Virgin will have had another 16 months or so of brand advertising, which sounds like might be a thing of the past in new franchises.... Operated by Virgin/Stagecoach/SNCF, maybe!!

Oh and that 221 has arrived at Ilford.

I'll say. It's always been my favourite TOC, though of course I have had a few problems at times with them as expected. I only wish that with the new livery they would keep the old yellow pattern or even get rid of it in favour of red and get new headlights like the Voyager. Even so, I'm glad to see you're keeping your picture. It's very well taken if I say so myself...

When do we think the first Class 221 will be getting out? I look forward to seeing one of those in the new livery scheme. Personally though I'd have thought they would've waited until the Pendolinos got done first. Evidently not so.
