Big difference in fares - could I have done it cheaper?

Note that Herne Hill and Brixton are adjacent stations. These are walk-up fares.

Journey 1, £16.10: Herne Hill overground (boundary Zone 2 & 3) to Tunbridge Wells, overground only via Orpington not London, off-peak day return, bought at the window from a human

Journey 2, £24.40: Brixton Tube (Zone 2) to Tunbridge Wells, using the Tube via London Bridge off-peak day return, bought from the machine

That's a heck of a difference, even though I appreciate that using the Tube and using London terminals hikes up the price somewhat. But would it have been cheaper to buy a ticket combination for Journey 2 another way? Say, getting a Travelcard plus also a journey extension from the Travelcard boundary out to Tunbridge wells? And if so, isn't this a flaw in the pricing system?

A super offpeak day return from London Terminals to Tunbridge Wells is £16.20, so £21 in total.

An offpeak day return (route Any Permitted) from Brixton National Rail to Tunbridge Wells is £20.60 - includes National Rail Brixton-London Victoria, tube Victoria-Embankment and National Rail London Charing Cross-Tunbridge Wells.

Or the offpeak day return from Brixton to Tunbridge Wells on National Rail via Penge East and Orpington is also £16.10.

This allows one single tube and/or DLR journey from any Underground or DLR station in Zone 1 or Zone 2 to an appropriate London terminal, followed by one single rail journey from that terminal to Tunbridge Wells.

Thank you. These were walk-up fares for an off-peak day return. Seems odd that I was charged the Anytime Day Single charge.

One clue might be that I bought my "Journey 2" fare on a Saturday morning at about 8 am at Brixton Tube. I was issued a pink paper ticket and it had the words "OFF PEAK" on it.

My mistake. Yes, both sources are now showing £24.80 for this Anytime Day Single. Avantix Traveller National Fares Manual NFM 30 shows that the price was also £24.80 from May - September 2018.

These were walk-up fares for an off-peak day return.

I can't find any Off-Peak Day Return fares from Brixton Underground station to Tunbridge Wells. That's why I used zonal fares in post #4. There are such fares from Brixton railway station, £16.10 route Not via London or £20.60 route + Any Permitted.

If the ticket was issued on a Saturday morning, it was not issued during the validity of the current Fares Manual, which started on Sunday 2 September.

It would be helpful if you could tell us as much information as possible about the paper ticket issued at Brixton tube.

Bought at Brixton Tube on Saturday 25 August at about 0800. It was a pink Tube ticket, bought at the machine. Off peak return to Tunbridge Wells, via London terminals. I used it to get up to London Bridge for the interchange to overground there. Is that enough info?

I would have gone overground only, via Orpington from Herne Hill (my Journey 1 above) but there were engineering works forcing me to take my Journey 2.

I suspect I have been penalized for using a paper ticket when I could have used contactless as far as London Bridge, as a poster above says. I'll know that much for next time.

But I also wonder whether a Travelcard / off peak extension combo would have helped.

Additional question, while I await replies to the above - if we're re-routed to a more expensive journey due to engineering works (my Journey 2), are we eligible for a refund on the difference?

Also, would the original lower-cost route ticket be valid on the more expensive route caused by engineering works?

It depends on what SE tell passengers to do - if it included use of the tube, fine, but it used to be uses local buses to Herne Hill, so you may not get anywhere.
