No, there's a gap through Lostock station- they've been rebuilding the platforms all week. I think it's continuous from the south end of Lostock through to Bolton, though there may be some bits and pieces missing around Bolton station.

That slope was there before the transformer compound was built in front of it and has been for the last 25 years without any mishaps

In defence of td97's worry, failure of the slope would be much more disastrous now than it was for the past 25 years. Plus, the project's already been mired with ground problems; the last thing it needs is a landslip wiping out the feeder station. Slopes are notoriously fickle, and I personally think that any protection for the area around the feeder station is a good thing.

Presumably the slope has less far to fall now, since the construction of the ziggurat on which the feeder station sits?

Down line wired through Lostock station from the feeder point where they stopped yesterday, a few registration arms are missing and the wires are on slings at those points. The wiring roadrailers are parked on the down line near the feeder, but no-one on board. The platform work is still on going but all timber has been moved off the tracks. Photos to Dave for tomorrow.

The wiring goes just past the footbridge to join up to the existing. They have just started on the up line from the station to the footbridge. Presumably they will work from where they finished on the up line yesterday back to the station next.

This weekend and next they must be connecting the Bolton line overheads to the existing network at Ordsall Lane and Deal St.

Only Network Rail isolated the overheads at Ordsall Lane Jn this morning and no electric trains could access the Chat Moss from Manchester Oxford Road. An ‘oversight’ apparently. The isolation was shortened and electric services resumed.

Next weekend is a full block, with TPE Scotland services starting and terminating at Preston.

More progress at Lostock - C&C now installed through the station and C&C being installed on the Wigan branch. I was under the impression the Wigan branch was going to be electrified at a later date?

The Wigan Branch, as I recall, is only getting an overrun at this stage. I can assume that (if it hasn't got one already), the Atherton line from Salford Crescent is due to be similarly wired.

Only the down Atherton line, as far as Frederick Road. The wiring of both Hindley lines was specifically as active provision for the future, otherwise only the down Hindley would have been done, and a way found to avoid rebuilding Rumworth Road bridge.

Is there any chance if you know if the adjacent (two?) old sidings will survive all this/be electrified? Cheers.

I think the Earths may come through later, but I believe the ATFs are using the UTX "Dalek" cable routes that were sunk into the ground near the ATF Sectioning Station and in the "vee" between the Preston & Wigan lines earlier this year. The Earths might be using them too - @Joseph_Locke, am I presuming correctly?

ATF wires are definitely in lineside troughing/ducting through Lostock station. I may be wrong, but aren't earth wires used to avoid having to attach an earth bond to every mast? If so, either the masts are bonded individually, or they're bonded to an earth wire in the ducting.

I have just had a quick trip round the area, lots of orangemen at Lostock, the down line platform should get finished tonight, but the up line platform will be a push. The wiring gangs are still working on the fixings, but there were some missing registration arms and some with parts missing. The Wigan line is only wired on the down line.

There are no wires at Clifton and still only one line wired between the tunnel and Green Lane. It looks like the concentrated effort has been between Bolton and Lostock.

Living roughly half way between Blackpool and Manchester in Chorley my observations so far are
1. My railcard has been pretty well useless given that buses substitute for trains from mid evening and the line closes at weekends and now for a couple of weeks. Getting back from places such as Edinburgh, York, Furness and the Lakes before buses take over makes the days out short.
2 It seems I will no longer be able to get direct trains to Buxton, Edinburgh, Windermere or Furness without changing and it a pain waiting on Preston station when there are no planned connections.
3 It seems I will only be able to get stopping trains to Manchester given that Scotland trains will go via Wigan and the Furness/Lake District will not stop here.
4 why on earth has it taken so long do get the job nearly done? Passengers are getting fed up with the constant disruptions.
Anyhow rant over and decision made not to renew my old folks railcard.
