I assume this is only in the latter days of Valentas when they had stopped maintaining them?

It was a local instruction in the Sectional Appendix, not sure when it dates from...possibly since 1984, when the HST first started on the HML. An HST on 1 power car wasn't allowed to depart Inverness & Kingussie (South), Carrbridge & Blair Atholl (North) unless it was assisted. I can't remember exactly what it said, as the instruction has, I believe, been removed. Didn't apply to MTU/VP185 engined Power cars anyway.

I'm sure someone out there remembers this instruction far better than I do...!

Here’s hopng that it’s not failed its inspection again
Do you know for certain that it “failed its inspection” previously? Because that seems quite a big assumption to make solely on the basis of an anonymised schedule appearing on Real Time Trains last week that may or may not have had anything to do with moving the set.

According to the project manager it's undergoing final snagging and output from Doncaster is "being arranged" Nothing about failing anything.

If it dates back that far then it has nothing to do with the engine type in terms of what the engine capability is. It is probably more to do with the East Coast MTU power cars (and EMT VPs) having the Brush electronics upgrade which includes a much improved wheel slip system. The ScotRail power cars do not have that upgrade, but they’re only on 4/5 car sets.

I can't remember the exact wording, but it definetly said the instruction did not apply to re-engined HST's. You are very possibly correct in stating that this was in relation to the upgraded electronics - mind you, what if a GWR power car had been taken on a short term loan to East Coast (which wouldn't have been likely at all, I know)...

The exact wording is as follows:
CLASS 253/254 (HST) - WORKING ON ONE ENGINE ONLY
The following supplements train company working instructions when a train is to proceed on Scotland Route lines with only one power car available for traction:

1. Lines over which assistance must be provided under certain conditions

• Blair Atholl and Dalwhinnie in either direction.
• Aviemore to Inverness in either direction.
• Aberdeen to Edinburgh
• Such assistance may be provided throughout between Perth and Inverness

If any of the following circumstances apply in respect of the above sections assistance must be provided.
1. the train comprises of more than 10 trailer vehicles
2. the working power car is NOT 433xx or 432xx
3. rail head conditions in the area concerned are reported as poor, for example during falling snow, severe frost, drizzle and poor leaf fall adhesion days.
4. other technical problems exist with the train to which the driver or the train operator’s Fleet Controller will draw attention.
5. signalling equipment failures or temporary/emergency speed restrictions exist in the section preventing
an unchecked run being made on a rising gradient.

Bit of a tangent, but the requirement for assistance with a dead power car and more than ten trailers is interesting. Nine trailers has been the standard ECML rake since 2002, and was possible during the BR era if an eight-trailer set had the InterCity Executive Saloon added. Has ten or more ever run though?

Moved cancelled due to the general confusion and problems associated with the tractor on the line incident. Source being impeccable.

Don’t suppose there are any pictures of the fitted interior going about? The CGIs look good but would be interesting to see how the final product compares!

That sounds quite reasonable. It would seem odd to create a path a couple of days notice unless the set really was ready.

Seems to be rescheduled for tomorrow, running direct to Haymarket depot. Leaves 15.13, scheduled through Waverley just after 21.00.

Any reason its running via Waverley and Haymarket rather than the suburban?
That’s the route the VSTP submission requested..? In any case I’m led to believe there are ‘passengers’ aboard so presumably the stop in the Waverley is to let them get off.

Can you get from the South Sub directly into the depot?
p.s I just realised the time, it's currently sat at Heaton Nth Junction for 90 mins: are they having a celebration meal on board?

Hopefully we'll get some interior photos soon. I imagine ScotRail will be keen to publicise the arrival of the first fully refurbished set.

I think you can, but I you would have to cross all 4 lines into Haymarket.

If they are dining, hope no-one spills on the infamous carpet.

Route would be Monktonhall Jn - Millerhill - Niddrie South Jn - Niddrie West Jn - Craiglockhart Jn - Gorgie Jn - Haymarket Central Jn - reverse in Haymarket platform 0 (or Through Siding) - Haymarket depot. As you say it crosses the Up & Down South and Up & Down North lines.

The delivery is batting along! Four late out of Heaton North Junction, currently three early at Chathill chasing the tail lamps of 1S24..... ;)
