The other day I saw a driver cutting his toenails above his contols at Reading. Any one else seen any drivers or station staff doing any odd habits.

I believe a Virgin West Coast driver was caught getting to know his outer being. Made the papers of course.

I saw a photo in RAIL magazine of a french loco driver taking a **** in front of his loco, even though it was parked in a station platform.

I once saw outtake TV and the news reporter was talking about a driver who exposed himself in the cab, (reporter then laughs)

Not an "odd habit" as such, but today we had the following annoucement:

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your Train manager speaking, with an offer for one lucky customer to upgrade to First Class, for free! If anybody has any sellotape, or glue, would they please let me know, as the driver has split his shoe, and is currently driving barefoot!"

Nothing lethal, but last train i was on, the driver sparked up a few cigarettes. Just made me think, generally i believe its illegal, but hes in his own environment with ventialtion, i dont see how it would be illegal in a Logical state.

Illegal I'm not so sure of, but definitely unhelpful for your colleague who next occupies that cab!

It's illegal to smoke in an enclosed working environment or company vehicle. That includes driving cabs. We've had to put signs up in the staff mess rooms on the GCR among other places saying it is illegal to smoke inside any building or driving cab. Ridiculously including the steam engines.

It is a workplace therefore it is illegal. A driver on a line I used to catch was a frequent smoker, and the stench permeated the front carriage.

I would have to agree with you,it is equally the same as smoking in a office where many people work and is disrespectful for the person whos got to drive the same train next as they will have to smell stale smoke for the rest of there shift in the train.

I can confirm that it is 100% illegal to smoke in the driving cab of a Locomotive or Traction Unit of any type.

I've already had the staff reps give one driver "suitable advice" with the warning that if he does it again, it may result in disciplinary action.

Personally I'd lovely to see a fire suppression system installed (AFFF) in the toilets of trains to deter the hardcore smokers from using them as the smoker lounge.

Doesn't bother me too much,it's all the rubbish in the cabs that is a pain sometimes although I do clean it up and throw it in the train bin if possible.

It takes five seconds to do it but people don't bother.

Had a go at an instructor once and asked him why he was throwing rubbish out of the window.

Totally puzzles me that. Pilots are no different, at my former airline the first 5 minutes after arriving on the flightdeck was often spent cleaning up litter and food from the previous occupants - scruffy b******s.

Had a go at an instructor once and asked him why he was throwing rubbish out of the window.

Good on yer JD!

That was a Midland Mainline driver. I used to work with him at Toton. One sniff of the barmaids apron and he was like a dog on heat, so when he went to MML and was surrounded by all the lovely trolley dollies he was like the fat kid in the sweet shop!
Needless to say he resigned from MML and i believe he's now back at Toton.
