My idea: could the middle platforms return at Bristol temple meads?

i recently found an image Bristol temple meads in the 1900s. It shows the station with two extra middle platforms under the main canopy. Could these platforms be rebuilt to increase capacity?

Interesting idea. The outer platforms have been significantly widened since then, but I don't see why this couldn't be scaled back a bit (I can't ever see there being mail trollies shuffling around on them again) and one island platform be put back in, which is all that would be needed.

I know Bristol only from occasional visits, so would not have noticed that the present outer platforms are wider. I presume the curvature and stepping distance have been made better and that attempting to recreate the layout of the OP's photo would cause them to get worse - a complete no-no from health and safety point of view. I'm sure they would have considered putting in one island rather than reactivating the old Brunel station, so there must be good reasons not to do so. Perhaps the extra circulation space in the big train shed offers more potential for retail development (I remember there is already at least one pub) as traffic grows.

But only one, besides that and the wh-smiths BTM is desperately in need of more retail outlets.

Is it though? I go to a station to travel, not shop.

As long as I can get a coffee and maybe a quick bite to eat I'm more than happy. The less I'm having to dodge people bimbling about shopping the happier I am too.

Quite, though Network Rail seems happier about any increases in retail footfall than passenger footfall.

If some additional separately accessible through platforms were desired at BTM, an alternative might be to install some mid-platform crossovers, connecting to the through roads. The platforms would be end up a little shorter than the split platforms today as the mid platform signals would have to move back clear of the new pointwork, but there are many short trains calling, and it would only be some of the platforms affected.

Whilst I agree that the main function of a station is travel, Bristol Temple Meads does rather pale in comparison to other comparable stations at "Regional Capitals" on the retail side. Leeds, Manchester Piccadilly, even Birmingham New Street and Sheffield are far more fitting as major stations.

What sort of retail do folk have in mind? The very wide subway has quite a few food outlets already. There used to be a hairdresser down there, next to the gents, in my young days.

Though more outlets on the "unpaid" side of the barriers would be a good money-spinner for MR...
