I'd agree that the Class 70 looks pretty ugly.

For that very reason, my least favourite is the 20 - just can't endear myself to them.

Can't agree re: 47s though - they're my favourite - not the most spectacular loco by any means, but for sheer durability they deserve admiration, imho.

None; I don't give locos enough thought nor do they interest me enough really to bother thinking about it.

If you asked me this question about a multiple unit though... oh boy could I go on.

As for the ones you don't like, all the reasons sound superficial; they have revolutionised our railways.

I don't think any of them are particularly bad, at some point or another they've mostly done a good job.

These days, I'm getting a bit fed up of 37s, especially the obsession with them on railtours. I don't particularly mind them as such, it's just the way some people go on and on about them whenever they do anything at all.

^I agree, but maybe it's because they are becoming increasingly rarer. I saw one yesterday for my first time and quite liked it, but it doesn't seem much more special than any other loco but then again as I said I don't really have much interest in locos, I am more of a unit fan.

The problem here is the OP has mentioned the worst class of locomotive rather than saying for instance "what loco do you dislike".

The worst by far out the lot is the baby deltics due having stupidly bad power units even upon their compete replacement.

My least favorite though would have to be 57/6's they look stupid and barely work the sleeper services they were intended for so a complete waste of time and money.

When I was driving I used to hate having a 37 - just didn't like them. However,I would have been happy to spend all day on a 47 or,especially,a 56.

I think that there is an unwritten rule that enthusiasts take a dislike to the more frequently used locos because they stifle variety.

I personally think that Class 37s, 47s, 59s, 66s, & 67s are probably some of the most successful diesel classes ever introduced on our rail network. The Class 37s & 47s have earned their place for the variety of work they did and their longevity. 59s, 66s, & 67s for working straight out of the box and transforming the UK rail freight industry by being very reliable and requiring little maintenance.

To a lesser degree 56s, 58s and 31s did reasonably ok, and 60s... well no matter how much people love them... they require too much TLC to be financially viable from a long term perspective.

I agree.

The sucessful classes, which were reliable and built in large numbers, are the kind of ones "enthusiasts" dislike, whilst they love "obscure" classes built in small number.

Personally, my "least favourite" these days would probably be the kind of classes there were no real *need* for; could we not have had one class (with sub sections) rather than six varieties of the same thing?

But then, when I were a lad, that's the kind of variety that attracted me...

I think, to be serious, you have to be talking about the worst designed trains, unreliable, too long, too heavy, too weak, too "heavy maintenance"...

I don't personally have anything against them, but I reckon the class 92 must be the most unloved loco currently operating in Britain, as nobody ever seems to mention them in any posts at all! If there was an award for the least spoken about loco it would probably win - or is there some other loco that would get that prize?

Peaks. I like 47s, but to me 44s/45s/46s are just not nice.

I think Class 70 will be a close 2nd, they're fugly.

No one's mentioned any steam locos but my worse has to be the new class 70's. I like Westerns, Deltic's and 86's/87's but they are nothing compared to the kings/castles, LNER pacifics or duchesses they replaced.
