Large format ticket type - General name...?

I read the tickets section 1.8.1 Paper tickets and while it referred to this type of ticket, it didn't give its name. Is there a general name, along the lines of APTIS, SPORTIS etc for this (horrible!) ticket stock?

It didn't operate any gate lines! I had a bad feeling when I was approached in the queue - should have waited and gone to the window I think - been a luddite and demanded a 'proper' ticket!!

In my experience Wayfarer tickets fail to operate any gateline, regardless of stock.

More seriously, a West Midlands Day Ranger on this new stock caused me to miss a train # as it wouldn't operate a gate, whereas the old stock always did.

# Having missed my first train the next two trains were a) cancelled and b) at least 30" late so that was the end of my day ranging the West Midlands ...

A multi-faceted complaint has gone in to VTWC.

There’s often not much choice these days. A few weeks ago I bought a 4 Days in 8 Explore Wales Rover from the Ticket office at Crewe which was issued in the large paper roll format. How I wished I’d got it the day before at Nottingham. The size of it for a multi day railrover was so inconvenient as it didn’t fit in my wallet or railcard holder without numerous folds. So difficult to keep it in a good condition after using it for a few days. Also in this hot weather the ink began to smudge after I had stored it folded in my plastic railcard holder.

Paper Roll Ticket (PRT) is the correct name, as someone has already said.

The barcode should operate gates equipped with barcode readers.

Some countries that are very backward with regard to railways, such as Switzerland, have similar formats of ticket, though maybe not quite so large. Though they don't have barriers, of course.

My success rate at Newcastle is about 33% with these things. Usually show it to the scanner 3 or 4 times before giving up and joining the queue.

I tried it on the barriers at Manchester Piccadilly, Victoria & Stockport. No joy at any. 'Seek assistance' in all cases. Grr.

I have the credit card receipt element was well, when I get home I will try holding it against something hot - I assume there are thermal print tickets?? If so you must wonder how many are damaged from being held against coffee cups as people move through stations.

That's funny; I always thought PRT stood for Printed Receipt Ticket, i.e. printed on cheap receipt-type paper. Paper Roll Ticket sounds more logical though, but I do wonder if it might be backronym?

Rovers/Rangers are awkward to code into gatelines.

Any more clues please? I have been travelling this way for about a year now. What has changed? Are there any posters up announcing the change? (I've been on holiday for a couple of weeks). Why has it taken so long to implement?

As usual, my main "beef" here is the amount of (or actually the apparent complete lack of) information given to the travelling customer.

Those bog roll tickets are incompatible with the ticket barriers at Lincoln so they are now open all the time. What effwit thought it a good idea to abandon a well proven ticket format?!
