A penalty fare on tfl rail paid within 14 days is not a huge amount less than an walk on fare on the hex.

£40 pf tfl rail
£30 walk on fare hex.

However the interavailability issue is quite frankly ridiculous. I am surprised Heathrow express group didnt offer tfl rail lower track access fees in return for their tickets being valid on the tfl rail.

I believe that at T2/T3, there's two sets of ticket machines. The ones you see straight ahead as you come down the coridoor are the old annoying HEX+HEC only ones. If you turn around, you'll see another few behind you which are "normal" machines which let you collect tickets, and I believe buy any normal ticket too.
Would the normal person, seeing a set of ticket-machines straight in front of them as they head forwards, think of turning through 180 degrees to look for more machines?

In theory, yes, it does matter, as the ticket is not valid so you would be liable for a Penalty Fare. That is the official answer.

Whether it is enforced I cannot say. Whether you would like to take the risk is entirely up to you. I cannot make that decision for you.

Not on a U-zone paper ticket. As I said earlier, a U-zone fare is only valid for a zonal journey on LU/DLR.

The system is a bit archaic, but there are still rules regarding validity. You can't just pick and choose the bits you like and ignore the bits you don't. Until they are changed, unfortunately that is what you will be given as the official answer.

If it really is such a deal, you can of course try and get TfL to change the rules. They may or may not agree with you, but if you don't ask...

Sorry I am confused I always thought that a z1-6 travelcard had the same validity if bought at say Feltham SWR station or an underground station. If not I have been very lucky since the zonal system was introduced. (I now have my freedom pass so it does not matter to me)

A travelcard and a single fare from a NR station to a U Zone, or U Zones, are not the same thing at all. Only the travelcard allows multiple journeys on all modes except HEX and HS1 within the zones. But the discussion above is not about travelcards.

Ah thank you bb21 that is the part I had failed to grasp. I had assumed this was a "Zone 6 to Woking" ticket. Whilst it is actually "Zone 6 Underground". So yes I do see that it matters now, as I hadn't realised such a ticket was only valid on the tube/DLR within the zones and not also on trains and buses. I suppose the argument is if you want to use it on the train you buy a ticket to the specified station. Which brings us back to the first point, that there seemingly isn't a point to point ticket between Woking and Heathrow 123 station (only a ticket to Heathrow Bus, or the tube but not the rail station). Sorry for not understanding sooner.

However going back to my point about the ticket machines not offering a suitable ticket. I still maintain that a Zone 1-6 Travelcard + Woking (which you can buy) is the correct fare to have offered here, and is cheaper than buying two singles. So I still think the machines showing there is no fare are probably incorrect, albeit the fare is a different one from the one I originally stated.

I saw someone getting penalty fared on tfl rail the other day at hayes for having a london underground zonal ticket so they are not valid.

Which is going to create confusion when TfL rail is called the elizabeth line.

You can’t buy a ticket FROM ‘Zone 1-6 Travelcard’ TO Woking. You can theoretically buy a return ticket FROM Woking which includes a Zone 1-6 Travelcard, but it isn’t going to be easy to do that at Heathrow.
