Last weekend I took a trip over to Wales, travelling there on the Cambrian Line. However the experience has meant I'm hardly in a rush to repeat the experience.

My ticket from Birmingham to Harlech was supposedly for through train. The train was shown on the screens at Birmingham New Street as for Aberystwyth and Pwllheli. So far so good. I got on to a roasting hot 2*158 with all the windows open, but it was still way too hot.

When the guard came through to check tickets I double checked I was in the correct portion of the train. He told me "it doesn't matter, you'll have to change at Shrewsbury anyway". I replied that I thought it was a through train (it said so on my AP ticket) to which his response was "well, we like to keep you on your toes"!

On reaching Shrewsbury there was 2*158s in the adjacent platforms. It seemed one set had arrived from Aberystwyth and terminated and the other was the set I arrived on and they were simply swapping between them, causing all passengers to have to swap units. I've no idea why. When I used the same service on the same route a few weeks ago, the exact same thing happened, so it does seem like this is quite common.

Not great on a fine summer Saturday when many passengers have luggage! I checked with the guard which part to be in for Harlech and he directed me to the correct 2 coaches. However a few minutes after setting off it was announced that passengers for Pwllheli and the coast would have to change at Machynlleth for "a coach".

A few weeks previously we'd also had to change again at Machynlleth (despite supposedly being a through train) though at least on that occasion it was a train, not a bus. The guard advised that it was likely to take at least an hour longer by coach than the train. I am told the train was cancelled due to no guard.

In fact it turned out there were two buses. A coach, running non-stop to Barmouth and a double decker bus, serving all stations. I decided to change plans and go on the direct bus to Barmouth, as I know that the road route to get to Barmouth via Fairbourne, as the other bus would do, is much longer. If it was going to serve every stop, even the tiny request stops (some of which are along dead-end roads) I dread to think how long it would take. It would likely be quicker to wait 2 hours for the next train if going somewhere north on the line.

The coach was air conditioned and comfortable but got stuck in a traffic queue to get into Barmouth. We were stuck in a traffic jam for 40 minutes. When the coach finally reached Barmouth I bailed out. It was clear I was not going to get to Harlech in time to visit the castle before it closed and I couldn't face another 40 minutes in queuing traffic to get out of Barmouth again. In fact I'm not sure if the coach was going on if it was terminating and I'd have had to wait for the slower bus via Fairbourne.

On the return journey (yesterday) I was booked on the 15:01 from Barmouth. Yet again a baking 158 with no air conditioning. We got to Dovey Junction as the portion from Aberystwyth was arriving in the other platform, but left first to Machynlleth. Here the problems got worse.

It seemed there was a problem getting the two units to couple. I think each time they did it, the only one unit was able to get power. I think they must have tried to couple the units 5 or 6 times, whilst passengers sweltered on the stationary trains. Eventually it was announced that only the front 2 carriages (those I had arrived on) would operate through to Birmingham, and that a replacement bus would also be sourced for those left behind (Lloyds coaches must do very well out of Arriva!). I did wonder why they tried to couple so many times, I'd have thought it made sense to give up after the second or third time?

By this time, it was over 30 minutes after we were meant to leave. The guard then announced he would just pop over to the booking office to get water for passengers before we left and the train would be delayed no more than 5 minutes. When he returned, the water had all gone before I could get there. Then he announced that because of the delay the train coming to Aberystwyth was now occupying the single line, so we'd have to wait another 10 - 15 minutes for that before we could leave. He got more water ... this time I did get some, which was just as well as the temperature continued to rise inside the train. The refreshment trolley didn't seem to get on either.

Eventually we left about 50 minutes late. As we approached Newtown the train slowed to a crawl and we had to wait another approaching train. By this time it was over an hour late. At Caersws the replacement coach was still there. The guard was very keen to encourage people to switch to it saying that it's cool and air conditioned. I was tempted, but since I was on a split AP ticket I did not want to risk further issues by swapping from my booked (albeit now very late) train to a replacement bus (especially since it was never made clear where the bus was going, I doubt as far as Birmingham).

When we left the lady set next to me told me her phone was showing the train was cancelled beyond Shrewsbury. I had wondered if that might happen. So we endured a very hot journey to Shrewsbury. It was incredibly uncomfortable, and I've genuinely never experienced a train as hot and uncomfortable as this one was. I did hear the guard saying the air conditioning had been broken for at least a year.

The guard finally announced, as we were approaching Shrewsbury that he'd "just been informed by control" that the train would terminate there, and we were to transfer onto another train to Birmingham (I think this one had come from Chester). However to cap it all, he then announced that when we arrived at Shrewsbury, with 5 minutes to change onto this alternative service, he wouldn't open the doors until we had coupled to another unit, which took 5 minutes. By the time the doors opened, the other train was due to be leave, but had been held for us (so unnecessarily delaying that unit, too).

Of course the onward train was another sweltering 158 with broken air conditioning, for the rest of the journey to Birmingham.

Is it always this bad? I've booked a few times on a train through from Birmingham to Pwllheli and I've never once actually had a through journey. It always seems to be neccessary to change at Shrewsbury (regardless as to what the timetable might say) and often again at Machynlleth. I also noticed the last train of the day (there are only 4) yesterday was also cancelled. I don't know if the replacement buses even get to some of the more remote stations.

Given how busy the area was I thought the rail service to be extremely poor. The heat was extreme, but with numerous cancellations, delays and enforced extra changes, it was just adding to the unpleasant experience.

Now because I was travelling on two split AP tickets I hope I'm now not going to have a battle on my hands to claim delay repay for both tickets (since I was using two tickets, but making one journey).

All in all I felt it a real shambles and although it is such a beautiful railway line (and area) I'm not in a hurry to return there by train and repeat the experience.

Having the combination of factors listed above all happen on the same trip is unfortunate. However the Cambrians overall performance figures will still knock spots off the likes of VTWC and GTR!

Most performance issues on the Cambrian are a result of things that happen in the WestMidlands. You were just very unlucky.

The air con in the 158's has never been great and there's a persistent rumour that the etcs equipment drawstoo much power leaving the hotel power short.
Failure to couple events are very rare 158's do them all day long at Machynlleth and Shrewsbury.
Getting a 2 instead of a four happens frequently but tends to happen in clumps you can go weeks without seeing it and then get a few occurrences for a few days then it goes back to normal. aTW are now in their final 15th year of "no growth" the franchises unit shortages are well documented.
All change at Shrewsbury happens once every two or three weeks. The units are in a circuit with North Wales Coast and if you get disruption it's the only way to get units needing maintaience back to Machynlleth.

I have found the line to be okay, and I used the Cambrian fairly regularly when I was a student in Aberystwyth.

Unfortunately there is an issue with the air conditioning in more or less all TOC’s fleets of 158s - It has been going on for years and should have really been sorted by now.

It is fairly regular having to change trains at either Machynlleth or Shrewsbury, but not super common. I’ve been on loads of trains that have travelled through but it depends if there are 2 or 4 coaches, or if a unit of the wrong class (i.e not a 158) has found itself on a diagram as they also work to/from Holyhead/Chester earlier in the day.

The worst journey I ever made on the Cambrian was from Aberystwyth to Westbury. 2 coaches from Aberystwyth (at end of term student break around Easter) - Train terminated at Machynlleth. 4 carriages then arrived from Pwllheli already half loaded. Slightly delayed at Machynlleth. Very busy train from Shrewsbury to Newport so was standing. FGW 158 turns up at Newport. Mechanics arrive at Bristol to fix fault. Fault can’t be fixed, train cancelled at Bristol. Following train 2 coach 150 to Weymouth. No space for luggage and full and standing. Wasn’t a great day.

Generally, don’t have too many issues with the Cambrian though. The Coast portion does get heavily loaded between April and October though.

158 AirCon has never really worked from new. They put opening windows in as they had no confidence in it!
I’m not a regular by any means, but whenever I have been it’s always been fine. Indeed, on one occasion it was a through a train to Barmouth when should have been a change, so cuts both ways.

Might as well say that Keolis Amey plan to replace all the 158s with new CAF DMUs from 2024.
6 years is a long time though...
Mid-Wales doesn't always have such warm weather, either.
175s at least have decent aircon.

As a regular user of the Cambrian, I would agree with others that your journey problems were unusual. However I had problems there last Thursday; was due to get the 0630 from Caersws to Birmingham and got to the station to find it had been cancelled. Unfortunately the ticket machine and the telephone weren't working so couldn't find out what was happening, so had to wait for the 0730. Put a note on FB once I was on that train and got a link from a friend to ATW's site stating that the 0630 had been replaced by a bus, but since it doesn't actually go to Caersws station we didn't know anything about it.
Now got 2 complaints in to ATW, one for defective ticket machine and phone and another for not knowing about the replacement bus, plus Delay Repay for the hours dealy.

And yes I do know that ATW are short of suitable units for the Cambrian due to on-going repairs, plus I have been told of "industrial relations" problems wiith the gaurds at Machy.

SWR run 158s and 159s and don't seem to have major problems with the air conditioning. I know it's never been great, but they seem to do a far better job at maintaining it than ATW

One reason the units might sometimes get swapped at Aberystwyth is if there is a fault with the ETCS on the unit that has come from Birmingham.

I was on the Cambrian line last Wednesday.

Excellent journey to Aberystwyth on the 0925 from Birmingham. plenty of room and on time all the way.
Returned on the 1730 from Aberystwyth, plenty of seats available, everything fine until Machynlleth where we had to wait about 25 minutes for the other unit coming from Pwllheli. On arrival, it was taken out of service (for some reason I never found out) and everyone had to transfer to the single 158 which I was on. It was a scorching hot day, it was sweltering inside the unit and some people had to stand all the way to Welshpool before they got a seat.

There were spare 158s at Machynlleth which could have been utilised while we waited but no doubt there was some excuse why they weren't.
On arrival at Shrewsbury, it was tough luck for anyone wanting South Wales, the Cardiff train pulled out just as we pulled in!

SWT get 90% of them back to Salisbury every night and the fleet is not so stretched. Only about 25% of the ATW 158 fleet overnight at Mach.

I can't help with dud 158s on the Cambrian but in fairness to ATW I travelled from Cardiff to Crewe on a 175 in boiling hot weather last week. Timekeeping was spot on, there was enough space for everyone in comfortable seats lined up with windows, and the aircon was great.

Shame the network didn't get more 175s, the unsung train type hero of the early privatisation era.

Ambulance service had to be called to an ill passenger at Barmouth.

I think you'll find that the Pwllheli portion on your return is merely a connection and not an attachment. The unit works 2J32 1801 Machynlleth to Aberystwyth but which was that cancelled as a reaction of a passenger taken ill. I very much doubt the 158s at Machynlleth were spare but undergoing repair.
There have been quite a few cancellations recently on the Cambrian due to traincrew shortages.

I'm surprised to hear that a single 158 is deemed to be sufficient for day trippers returning home from all points on the coast, especially in the weather we're currently enjoying!

This stems from the decision to increase the Cambrian service about 3 years ago to provide 4 additional trains between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury in each direction with the same number of resources (no others available). The only way to meet this Welsh Government initiative was to reduce some of the 2 hourly trains from 4 to 2 car in order, in this case, to provide an additional 1830 Aberystwyth. A single 158 is probably not deemed to be sufficient but this poses the question as to where it woulds come from.
Even before the increase, however, th Pwllheli unit didn't go through bringing overcrowding complaints in the Summer. The day trippers are merely seasonal traffic and fleet number allocations don't make any allowance for this.

I used to have at least annual visits back to my uni town of Aberystwyth, but haven't been for a while - the train journey being a main factor.

Because they’ve increased the frequency? Aberystwyth has only ever been 2 coaches

Good job we are not in the 1970's then - no Sunday service , the worst of Chester's DMU allocation...etc etc

Personally , IMHO , the service is excellent (normally) - but then I suppose there are higher expectations.

Well, you would think that they could have held the Cardiff train knowing full well that one was just arriving from the Cambrian Coast. Perhaps that too was so crowded that they figured they could not take any more passengers?

What I can’t understand is that knowing the dire rolling stock situation in Wales, why the Welsh Government could not have announced a year ago who the new operator would be so that new train orders could be placed in order to get things moving sooner.

Trade between the Cambrian and Cardiff is pretty thin, its not uncommon for no one to inter change @ Shrewsbury I can go days without selling a ticket to South Wales anyway its hardly as though theirs a huge wait for the next train at Shrewsbury with 28 direct trains a day to Cardiff!

As to the Welsh Government they could have done may things but have chosen not to.

As I see it day in day out I do scratch my head at where people seem to think its a problem line are coming from. My daughters just finished commuting to Shrewsbury Sixth Form College from Newtown in the two years shes done it you can count on one hand the occasions shes been later than 15 minutes or hit by a cancellation.

The first one UP in the mornings seems to have been cancelled quite a lot though, Gareth, from reports from friends of mine whose children also attend Shrewsbury for school, and I know this wasn't the first time I've ended up an hour late for a meeting in London.
Otherwise agree, the service and staff attitude on the line is great.

Announced on BBC Travel News cancellations on Cambrian tonight and tomorrow so must be bad.
Position tomorrow is 13 full and 4 part cancellations due shortage of train crew. Road transport sourced.

17 cancellations or part cancellations on the Cambrian line tomorrow......any idea what’s going on? Sudden large scale traincrew shortage?

Come back from London/Birmingham a number of times during the summer often leaving the seat very wet with sweat! Perhaps they could have collections tins to fund aircon repairs/replacement :)

Bad couple of weeks last November - being in my high viz intercepting parents dropping off their children at 0730 on the road outside station was not ideal.

It's the oldRMT overtime Ban mainly effecting Pwllheli worked diagrams. Couple of versions why doing rounds as to what it's in protest to.
