Advertisement/Special liveries

I grew up with P460, the Plymouth Laira based class 118 DMU, in its promotional ‘British Telecom’ livery. Picture (not mine) of it leaving Dawlish here.


It went past the end of my road almost every day in the mid 1980s.
It was unusual to see something that wasn’t painted in either (grubby) all over blue, or blue and grey back then. So it stood out (actually even my mum would notice that it was different and mention it).

Nowadays, unfortunately we’re constantly bombarded with advertisements left, right and centre, so we’ve learnt to filter them out.
Oversaturation has diluted the impact of advertisements to a certain extent.

Not my photo, but SWT had a wrap advertising something on 450118 (and possibly another unit, not sure). Always thought it a bit unfair on the first class passengers who happened to be on this unit though - paying extra for first, but not even being able to see out the windows!

I believe it was two units and that the 'advert' was to advertise the advertising space (if you see what I mean).

If know one has mentioned this but the Christmas liveries on the Pendolino a while back (Virgin Traindeer) & (Pengulino). Also VTEC 91. Chiltern did the DVT Christmas livery back in 2017.

Don't forget the Class 365s which had 4 of the class with advertising vinyls for the Great Northern route which I believe was done by WAGN and kept by FCC until GTR decided in their infinite wisdom to remove them.

The 4 Class 365s were:

• 365510 - Cambridge and Ely
• 365519 - Discover Peterborough
• 365531 - Norfolk-Nelson's County
• 365540 - Garden Cities of Hertfordshire

Vision from inside is not affected as ‘contravision’ vinyl is used over windows. Many of the airport transfer buses I use in various parts of the world are completely wrapped, but the contravision allows one to see out perfectly.

It may allow you to do that, but I find it just makes me dizzy. Something to do with the two eyes not being sure whether they are focused on the same dot or nearby ones. I do have fairly strange vision though - but Nottingham City Transport recently announced they wouldn't use it any more so I'm probably not the only one.

Heathrow Express usually seems to be wrapped in some logo or other.

Only used to be one coach intially with RBS, and the original Vodaphone one.
Then moved to the full train with the second Vodaphone livery and the current sponsor, TATA communications

For some reason, the picture reminded me of the Sealink-liveried Mk1s. They look nothing like each other, but does Sealink count for the purposes of this thread?

Virgin have a 221 currently advertising "Festival Number 6" in Port Meirion as they do most years as they are sponsor and have ticket offers for those going to the festival. A lot of the celebs took the train to Bangor last year if I recall.

Saw it for the first time this year, this morning on the North Wales Coast.
