I grew up with P460, the Plymouth Laira based class 118 DMU, in its promotional ‘British Telecom’ livery. Picture (not mine) of it leaving Dawlish here.

It went past the end of my road almost every day in the mid 1980s.
It was unusual to see something that wasn’t painted in either (grubby) all over blue, or blue and grey back then. So it stood out (actually even my mum would notice that it was different and mention it).
Nowadays, unfortunately we’re constantly bombarded with advertisements left, right and centre, so we’ve learnt to filter them out.
Oversaturation has diluted the impact of advertisements to a certain extent.
