Up until the sprinters came in the class 47s used to work all the aberdeen and highland mainline services even the push pull 47/7s made regular appearances at inverness although class 37s regulary deputised also on these services.
They also worked the sleepers till the class 37s took over for a few years there was a special sleeper fleet at inverness classed 47/6s with eth for working the sleeper till the 37s with generator vans took over.
But as you mention above res class 47/7s or 47/4s took over the sleeper duties till the class 67s entered service.
The Inverness 47s that I remember most from Aberdeen - Inverness were "The Queen Mother" and "Strathisla". "Charles Rennie Mackintosh", "The Enterprising Scot" and "University of Strathclyde" were also IS-allocated at the time, but I recall seeing the first two more regularly than the others. Being held up by the The Queen Mother at the level crossing in Elgin was a fairly regular occurrence when I was running late for band practice!

If you're going from memory, you're doing not too badly - 47541 was The Queen Mother :)

I grew up spotting in the 1970s and we always loved the rarity of a named Brush Type 4 aka Class 47. So City of Truro, North Star, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Sir Daniel Gooch, George Jackson Churchward etc.

the original version of this post said you saw six of the "namers" at Westbury..........always seemed strange to me that they used the "named" 47s on stone trains instead of expresses

"John of Guant"
spoof Class 87 nameplate in "Ye Olde John o' Gaunt" pub in Lancaster.
The landlord made it himself as a joke: he wanted to see how many people actually noticed. Not many!

“Sir Kenneth Grange” and “T.C.B. Miller MBE” - two people who really deserve to be recognised by the railway.

Plenty of other decent names around, though I did think it was particularly classy of DRS to re-use the EM2 names on the 88s.

I don't know much about the Southern lines, would City of Truro have been through Basingstoke? I've got a very vague memory of seeing a class 47 down there coming through the station when visiting down there as a child and the name rings a bell. I was similarly excited on seeing a class 47 as they seemed the special engines whereas the 37's were run of the mill up in Inverness.

On a stone train from Merehead possibly?

Probably likely have been a cross county working through basingstoke back then the other named ones above would of been most likely have been on expresses on the great western than stone trains at westbury.

And that's why Gralistair saw six at one go at Westbury?
If memory serves me right, when delivered they were the first 47s on the Western and were built as no-heat: no boilers, no ETH. May have been converted later

All those locos he named were 47/4s a few of them were painted in gwr green isambard kingdom brunel was 47484 one of them was 47500 north star was 47640 im sure.
These would of all been named in the 80s.

50 011 ‘Centurion’. First 50 I ever saw. In the centre roads at Birmingham New Street.

Back in the early 1980s amongst the named Stratford 47s the ‘County’ series were always a pleasure to see on the Liverpool St - Norwich services. For the record:

47580 County of Essex
47582 County of Norfolk
47583 County of Hertfordshire
47584 County of Suffolk
47585 County of Cambridgeshire

The loco controllers at Liverpool St used to try to ensure these rarely strayed away, as you never got them back until an exam was due.

The Western Region Class 47s were named soon after delivery in the mid 60's.

Incorrect. D1660 to D1677 named in the mid 60s. I think they were steam heat boiler fitted only initially. Dual braked - vacuum and air. Possibly wrong on this and may have been no heat at all not even steam. However under TOPS no heat were numbered 47/3. Steam heat were 47/0 and electric/dual were 47/4

The Western Region Class 47s were named soon after delivery in the mid 60's.

Correct.

Thanks for the photo, I don't think I've ever spotted a named one up here but will keep an eye out.

I was a little puzzled as I thought this was a picture of Inverness station after the discussion about trains here and was wondering when the heck a 57/3 was up here but then realised it wasn't Inverness.

The above image was taken at Glasgow Central on 11th November 2015. Was top n' tailing a snow machine with 37218 ultimately bound for Perth Down Loop; the working was 2Z01. Hope that helps. :)

Not used (yet) but I always wanted the ECML tradition of racehorse names to include "Blink Bonny", which was a racehorse and a pub next to a level crossing on the line at Christon Bank north of Alnmouth.

I've always had an interest in electrification and it's a regret for me that Gresley got the top job in front of Sir Vincent Raven. I wonder why no-one's named an electric loco after Raven.
