The Virgin TVMs at Manchester Piccadilly do not offer the ‘Via Macclesfield’ (equivalent to Any Permitted) fares between Stockport and Stoke on Trent, and I suspect that they won’t offer them from Manchester to Stoke either.

The only options are Virgin only or Northern only.

Is this allowed?

Report it to the ORR for investigation as a breach of the consumer regulations - it could cause people wanting to travel on different TOCs in different directions to pay more than necessary. The retailer ought to have procedures in place to test its machines to ensure a case like this does not arise and the ORR ought to take action to enforce that. (Now via Macclesfield by the way.)

Well unlike Transport Focus the ORR has a big stick - the power to prosecute - but that comes with a high threshold (e.g. evidence of deliberate TOC misbehaviour).

It would probably be a good idea to report it to Virgin Trains first. They may be unaware of it.

Yup the route will need adding to Profole Manager can you remember the faff getting the Borders line station to show on our TVMs before the Qeens visit?
Can I suggest dropping a line to the fella at VWC to tell him about this problem? Looks like another case of pricing changes having unconsidered side effects.

That's quite silly. Why don't all TVMs just get automatically loaded with every customer-visible walk-up single and return fare? That was a lot of data in 2000 or thereabouts, but now the lot would easily fit on someone's phone.

Because the machines and their operation are based on older technology than is currently available.

There are some tickets such as ferry tickets that you wouldn’t want showing on a TVM and there are several thousand destinations you wouldn’t want to display. There was a comment that the VTEC. machines show every Railcard instead of only the relevant cards , thus would be much much worse with routes destinations and ticket types.
