Adding zones to Oyster Travelcard

I currently have a zone 1-3 Travelcard on my Oyster and need to add zones due to a house move this weekend. If I look online, there is information on the TfL site that it is possible, but when I click on the link it just takes me to my account where there are a number of options, but not one to add zones. I called the "24 hour helpline" and got a menu of options but nothing I needed, followed by a message that other departments are closed and nobody can help with a number of things including Oyster queries. I pressed * to hear the full opening times as instructed, but that just looped back to the start of the menu. Is it even possible to add zones to an Oyster Travelcard, or is it just something that is advertised but is impossible to do? I get the impression that if I do get through I will just be referred to the website where that option doesn't exist, in the hope I will just cancel my existing Travelcard and buy a new one, which is, of course, more expensive.

The exact procedure depends on whether the original Oyster was bought from TfL or a Train Company.

Where it was issued by TfL, you request it online and they send you a new Oyster card (yes, really) and charge an admin fee for the privilege...and you can only do it once during the ticket's validity.

Where it was issued by a TOC, you need to go to a Ticket Office run by that TOC that can sell Oyster. It's possible you may have to wait a couple of days for them to calculate it, but the difference is worked out on a daily basis, using the price that applied at the time of purchase.

Also, to get the Oyster helpline you need to call between 8am and 8pm.

That's awful. Yet another reason why TFL should never have been allowed to take over any NR ticket office.

I bought online from TfL. The website says I can amend online but nothing about sending a new card or an admin fee. When do they cancel the original card and what happens while I’m waiting for the new card? In any event there is no option to add zones online!

Thanks, that’s the piece of information which should be on the website but isn’t and the automated menu doesn’t seem to be working either when I pressed * to hear the opening times.

UPDATE I phoned the helpline and they took my details to pass on to another team who will perform the calculation and call me back with further details. I asked why I can’t do it online and he said that the only way is via the helpline as there is a dedicated team that deals with amendments. I asked why the website says to do it online and he found the page that I was talking about but just said that the website is sometimes misleading! Whether anything will be done to change it is another matter, not the first discrepancy I have found between the TfL website and the truth...

On what grounds?
Making a complaint may encourage them t update the website with information on the correct procedure. That way other people won't have to jump through as many hoops as you did.
