Class 165-174: BREL/ABB/ADTranz/Bombardier diesels
Class 175-184: Alstom diesels
Class 185-194: Siemens diesels
Class 195-199: CAF diesels

Class 7x0 (excluding 701): Bombardier "Aventra" EMUs
  • Class 710 for London Overground
  • Class 720 for Greater Anglia
  • Class 730 for West Midlands Trains
Class 7x5 (excluding 777): Stadler "FLIRT" EMUs/EDMUs
  • Class 745 and 755 for Greater Anglia
Class 7x7 (excluding 700): Siemens "Desiro City" EMUs
  • Class 707 for South Western Railway
  • Class 717 for Great Northern
Excluding the Class 7xx outliers as listed above, are we finally starting to see some logic in post-privatisation TOPS designations?

I think the CAF DMUs should have been Class 190 and 191 personally, but I do agree with the OP's point.

It's OK, the next time there's a new class it'll ruin whatever logic you think you see there Fully 30% of the 7xx are outliers as it is

I've just thought, is there a reason why the bi-mode 319s are Class 769 and not Class 719?

Because Bi-mode sets have been allocated the 750-799 range of class numbers, 700-749 is reserved for AC and AC/DC EMUs only.

Class 750 upwards is for EDMUs I think - GA Class 755 fits this "rule".

The 777 isn’t a Flirt so it’s not an exception to the Stadler rule. ;)
