Can you get from Luton Airport Parkway to the actual airport in 10 minutes?
If you have luck with the timings (i.e. bus departs just after you get onto it) then yes, it's possible. If not, you'll be delayed by another 5-10 minutes at most (at least in my experience). Obviously this is not as simple as the situation at Gatwick, but that has its own complications again.

I don't know how much it might have improved since the access road to the airport (under the taxyway) was turned into a dual carriageway, but there certainly used to be the possibility of significant congestion at some times including early in the morning, and the shuttle buses got caught up in this. Also the shuttle buses haven't always been reliable, possibly because of congestion or just because they've been very busy.

The rapid transit system ("Luton DART") will make airport access much easier, though passengers will still have to walk through the new snaking 'duty free' shopping maze to get to the departure lounge!

Happy to be corrected there. I certainly wasn't implying passenger driven request - more an airport / operator one.
Well airport yes, they definitely wanted it. Southern resisted until the revenue risk was with the DfT.

People turn up at Reigate thinking they can use their Oyster card on a regular basis. Gatwick Express only would have not led to this kind of confusion.
Well the problem is where do you draw the line. I'd have been happier for Reigate to have been included as a station served by Southern services. If it had though, what about Nutfield or Godstone? One thing I can be certain of is that the number of people caught out by Reigate is minuscule compared to the number who would have been caught out at all the other stations if it had been Express only. And that's before you consider whether it would have been possible to use Oyster on the sometimes slightly faster Southern trains using the same tracks as the express but calling at CLJ and ECR.

To be fair, you can't get from the station to Gatwick North in ten minutes either.
Well no, but you are within the airport on the shuttle thingy between the terminals. I was countering the difference between Luton with slightly faster trains but not actually the airport and Gatwick which is as good as within the airport itself.

I have to resolve quite a few unfinished journeys every month, definitely more than three.

Most happen because they leave the barriers open at rush hour where I work and the current of people tends to push you along quite quickly so I tend to tap the card and keep walking; half the time it fails to register. The other one happens interchanging from long distance national rail to intra London national rail at CLJ where there’s no on platform reader.

I haven’t had any trouble. Always have to ring up though, it doesn’t work online. Whether that really saves me time over walking to find a ticket barrier, who knows. YMMV.

FYI there is a couple yellow readers in the subway at the bottom of the stairs to platform 17 :)

can i just check what is the charge if i touch in during peak time and dont touch out
£8.00 compared to £14.70

So it might look like a way to save money but you could be checked on the train southbound from Gatwick and asked about where you boarded.

Whilst the crowds thing is undoubtedly true, Luton is 44km as the crow flies from Charing Cross (the 'centre' of London) and Gatwick is 40km. Plus it's possible to get to Luton in 20 mins from a London terminal (with EMT), whereas Gatwick takes at least 25-30 minutes on the fastest trains.
Gatwick has many more full-service airlines and serves many more important destinations than Luton, which is primarily for low-cost carriers and locals. Gatwick is also substantially busier, with more important customers. The two are not really comparable.

Yes, I was not disputing that Gatwick is a more important airport, but rather the assertion that Luton is not as near (distance or timewise) to central London, when in fact the distance and time are quite similar.
