Europe has a new Highspeed train. The Austian railways ÖBB are about to intend a new train category called Railjet. These trains will be used on the austrain east-west-mainlines including the new high speed line between Vienna (Wien) and Linz and further to Salzburg and Innsbruck. But it is not an EMU, it's more like a regular loco-wagon-train with conventional couplings at each end of the wagon unit. There are also some class 1116 "Taurus" which are painted in the same colours. Here you can see some pictures of its first attempts at walking (it's all commented in german, if you want to I can translate).

To my mind it has a very noble and precious look...

My information is that it will run at 230 kmph (about 140 mph) on the high speed line between Linz and Vienna and 200 kmph (125mph) at the rest of the Austrian network where possible. 230 kmph is the highest permitted speed of those Taurus locos.

Now this first unit is in it's testing phase, especially it's running smoothness, the compatibility in Hungary, Switzerland and Germany and the connection loco to cab car are tested.
Maybe you can see it somewhere around Vienna, on the high speed line Vienna - Linz or on the lines to Hungary in August.

OBB planned to procure 23 units. In December 2008 the new train category will be introduced (timetable change). These trains will first run on the lines Vienna - Hegyeshalom - Gyor - Budapest and Vienna - Linz - Salzburg - Munich in a two-hour-tact. In December 2009 when all units should be built another line connecting Vienna via Linz - Salzburg - Innsbruck with Bregenz (- Zurich) will be opened.

I presume this means you don't realise that if they were here they would almost certainly be using MUs, probably similar to what we have.

Yes, but the only reason they have the loco hauled trains is because they overordered the freight locos and had some coaches made for them. If they hadn't overordered the locos, they would likely be using MUs.

Anything close to Railjet quality, whether MU or LHCS, would be far better than the Voyagers and pendos that are over here.

Where is the gen that they were conversions (?) from over-ordered freight locos btw? I'm intrigued that they ordered 125+mph freight locos. Railway Gazeete quote below makes it look like the Taurus-LHCS was chosen outright:

"The decision in favour of loco-hauled push-pull rolling stock followed a detailed analysis that included evaluation of distributed power trainsets such as the ICE-T and ICE3. The railjet will be the first loco-hauled push-pull trains in the world to operate at 230 km/h. "

They're not conversions, the Eurosprinter locos are both freight and passenger use.
The Eurosprinters that OBB have are the ES64U4, which are "interoperable high-power universal locomotives"

It combines the proven components of the ES64U2 with the multi-system capability of the ES64F4. It is Europe’s first high-speed, high-power locomotive which is capable of operating in both AC and DC networks.

ÖBB. please please please DON'T come over to the UK!

It's getting worse and worse here in Austria since the ÖBB decided to be a new "customer-friendly" company and not a good old railway anymore. I am looking forward to 2012 when the passenger market is opening in Austria.

The old coaches like Schlieren, long distance (at least still plenty of them around) and 4010s are/were much more comfortable than the new wooden seat "Trabants", "Desastros", CityShuttles and Railjets!

Also, I like the Voyager, at least in four seat compartments where you can stretch out.

The standard class seating looks very very similar to the unpopular seats in FGW HSTs and Scotrail 158s... (amongst others)

If they did bring that over here, you'd still get enthusiasts and passengers moaning about how **** everything is.

If you can buy your ticket in Budapest, currently you can get an advance ticket Budapest - Munich (or vice versa) for €29. In Germany, or on-line, the cheapest fare is €39. There is more availability of the €29 ticket, but it can only be bought at MAV ticket offices or travel agents in Hungary. The advance tickets can be bought no later than 3 days before departure.
