Which is the 1960s concourse at Leeds? The original LMS art-deco one is a gem, and is probably pre-WW2. I agree the other one is confusing and a bit of a mess, but isn't that later than the 60s? I'm open to correction.

What I called the 1960s concourse may in fact be from the 1970s, but I assumed it was 60s based on the office block above (which looked very 1960s prior to being re-clad).

I think it's from 1967 when the station underwent some re-modelling.

A fair reflection of the city it serves.

Don’t see what is wrong with Sunderland station. Whilst it won’t win any awards for beauty nor architectural merit, it is conveniently located, reaching the trains is quick and easy, and the platform is sheltered from the elements. Simple and easy to use in my book.

The station was re-modelled in 2002 as well going from 12 to 17 platforms.

I remember the 2002 remodelling well, but the previous rebuild was definitely before my time, whether it'd been the 60s or 70s!

60s are definitely before my time! 2002 barely in memory. I can recall Edinburgh getting re-modelled in 2007 I think it was.

The 1967 concourse at Leeds could definitely do with a refurb. Hopefully Queen Street will look better after it's re-modelling as well and move up the rankings, it's actually quite a pleasant station.

The concourse is a bit grim but the trainshed is quite pleasant, airy and has a very modern feel to it. Just needs a Manchester Piccadilly job on the concourse.

Agreed... but if we can get the carbuncle out of the way we can replace it with something more in keeping with the 1938 building, and of course with a wider gateway from concourse to platforms!

The trainshed was nice for about 6 weeks before the build-up of soot from the diesel exhaust began to take the sheen off. Nearly two decades on, the platforms feel almost as dark as they did before the most recent rebuild.

(For the avoidance of doubt, my wrecking ball comment was referring solely to the 1967 concourse).

I would agree, it's quite bright in general but the '60s concourse is just so drab.

Yes, the 1967 concourse is completely out of keeping with the LMS construction, something which harmonises with the old and the modern - not an easy task.

Thanks for the correction. I suppose I assumed it was contemporary with the latest remodelling. I know the old concourse was semi-derelict and out of use for a number of years after the platforms behind it were converted to a car park.

I only know because the various re-modellings were mentioned in a book I have, but I had to double check the dates!

Whilst I agree that the station is compact and central it isn't very convenient if you are interchanging from car. There is no car park and it is one of only a few stations with no disabled drop off/pick up point shown on National Rail.

Same here, the whole station needs revamping on street level.

Surprised Blackpool North isn’t on the list or is it just unpopular with enthusiasts as it gets mentioned quite a bit on this forum.

Seemed fine when I was there a year or so ago. They do have a strange system of making people queue off of the platforms, but I guess that's no different to St Pancras etc.
