I completely agree.

Far fewer drivers than cyclists run red lights but, as you say, the consequences when they do are more serious.
Indeed. It's just bizarre that many of these cyclists are also motorists and vice versa. You would think they would all look out for each other. Hey ho. Back to local laws though, I would ban chewing gum.

Unfortunately red light jumping by cyclists in London has reached epidemic levels.
In a TfL report from 2007, a series of observations undertaken at a number of busy road junctions showed that 16% of cyclists (1 in 6) jumped red lights.

It also highlights some differences in behaviour by direction (a larger proportion of cyclists jumping red lights on journeys towards central London in the AM peak and away from central London in the PM peak) and by gender.

Proportionately far more female cyclists are killed or seriously injured than male cyclists. There is some anecdotal evidence that women are more reluctant to jump red lights and are thus more likely to be hit by left-turning lorries. Some cities, such as Paris, have decided to allow cyclists to go through red lights.

Far fewer drivers than cyclists run red lights but, as you say, the consequences when they do are more serious.
In 2012, CTC (reported by The Guardian) said:
CTC said:
Of pedestrians injured in London in a collision caused by red light jumping only 4% involve cyclists, whereas 71% occur when a car driver jumps a red light and 13% when a motorcyclist does.
Elsewhere, in Newcastle City Centre, my own observations tell me that far more taxis jump red lights than cyclists.

So if there were absolutely no other traffic about, it would be fine for, say, a motorist to ignore the law and drive the wrong way down a one-way street? Sorry, but we can't all decide which bits of law we'd like to obey and which we wouldn't.
Clearly that wouldn't be fine but it's not an equivalent situation because:
I could (and would) stop and dismount if encountering an oncoming pedestrian without putting them in danger or inconvenience;
Footways aren't directional;
Cars take up a whole lane width;
The rationale for separating road users travelling at different speeds isn't there.

That figure certainly bears out my experiences. If anything, 10 years on, it seems a little on the low side.

That’s an interesting point.

A view I have heard before is that female cyclists are less likely to cycle assertively, adopt a dominant lane position, etc.

As someone who cycles and drives (less of the latter these days) in London, another issue I’ve noticed is where cyclists (illegally) undertake queues at traffic lights, including LGVs. Traffic which may then turn left, right when they’re in the near side mirror blind spot, with disastrous results.

Anyone who doesn't clean up their dog's deposits to be shot at dawn.

To refer to one of the earlier posts in this thread, I would agree with this. What is more infuriating is when people do pick up their doggies' deposits, but they then leave the bag hanging from a nearby bush or a tree - or worse still, leave the bag on the pavement. I propose that these people are dangled upside-down until someone else can be bothered to take them down.

Any of the zimmer crew going at more than 5mph on their motor scooter on pavements shall have their vehicles limited to no more than 0.5mph and the words "speeding gangsta" sprayed across the body of the orange helmets they must wear.

All road vehicle drivers to be tested every 5 years with one re-take if needed. Those failing their driving test twice in a row has their car impounded and auctioned off for pothole repairs. <D

All cyclists to be tested every 3 years on road safety and properly licenced.

Deliveroo and Uber Eat drivers to be charged five times the fare on peak services plus £300, as that is how much space their packages take up on the train and the cost of delay minutes they cause. 8-)

They use bags round your way? o_O

Luxury! ;)

Funny story on the subject of dog-eggs, back in the late 1990s some juvenile delinquent in a district of Huddersfield decided to rob a lady who was walking her dog. He took the only thing (other than the dog) she had with her- the carrier bag which she used to clear up not only her own dog's mess but (being a better citizen than most), any other un-scoopa-d poopa that she encountered!

Agree with all the above. Many drivers our way, don't seem to know what their indicator lights are for, or think red traffic lights apply to them, or one way signs.

I would add to my post, proprietors who when adding a few additional cl of hot water to your cup of tea, call it an "upgrade" and charge an extra 30p for the privilege. Greggs, this means you.

Do they do that? I never go in there.
Here’s another one:

Costa shall be forced to open an identical tea shop (called, erm Tosster), next door to every current coffee shop they own, but to then sell the tea at half the price of their coffee.

Yes, and they should get rid of that Twining's "Everyday" rubbish that tastes of brewed up floor sweepings as well.

Any shop selling cups of tea be legally obliged to sell Yorkshire Tea. Anyone found selling weak, manky PG tips, Tetley or Typhoo to be flogged with a soggy tea bag until it smarts quite badly.

I think this poster may have missed the point of this thread!

Well the potholes are a nightmare and the council doesn't seem to do nuchal about it, so I think this might draw their attention to it.

The way to people's minds is through their pockets! ;)

Agreed, some of the roads around here are dreadful.

A lot of the time they re-tar them but don' allow them to set properly before allowing vehicles on to the surface, so you end up with small ruts which get bigger and crack in the frost.

But I agree, they don't redo the roads enough regardless of that.

!

Indeed. And that goes for anyone caught trying to palm the public off with so called tea bags marketed as "one cup".

(actually, I personally don't mind the PG Tips).

Last year I was walking in the Brecon Beacons and found such a bag left by a trig point. Considering the number of sheep grazed on the mountain, with predictable results, I am puzzled as to why the owner felt the need to "scoop" in the first place.

After last night: Anyone allowing a smoke/fire or burglar alarm to be heard ringing for more than 9 minutes after 23:00 and/or any time when i am asleep to be beaten with the article causing the ringing. The fact the house may be on fire is no defence. Should the property be unoccupied the neighboring property owner to be allowed to enter the property, smash the alarm with a mallet and then go back to bed and get some sleep!

Businesses who assume that I want my sausage and egg roll toasted. If I wanted it toasted, I'd ask .

When did this crap start ?

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I had a similar disturbance a couple of nights ago, but it was a car horn that had somehow been set off, and it sounded continuously for around ten minutes. There were no flashing lights, so I suspect it was a fault of some kind rather than the alarm. It's enough to drive you insane at that time of night!

Those who change lanes and fail to indicate should be only ever allowed to use the inside lane.

Those who tail gate have to sit a 2 minute waiting penalty at the next Parking space / junction.

If you do t give way, when you have the opportunity to do so and cause an obstruction you should also have a 2 minute waiting penalty applied.

Drivers who have forgotten what yellow box junctions* mean shall have their tyres slashed and must continue their journey on foot... with me deliberately stepping across them every so often.

*= specifically the one at the junction of Station Road and Soothill Lane, WF17.

I think some forget to top up their blinker fluid  mind you I think cars with a retail price of over £30,000 don't come with a blinker fluid tank as standard, so they only work if the poor owner has spent the extra for the blinker fluid tank

All citizens are required to carry a travel pack of tissues (handkerchiefs are also acceptable for the traditionalists) when in a public place. Any citizen who sniffs more than 3 times in a row without blowing their nose is sentenced to 6 months hard labour.

This is a lighthearted thread asking people what local laws would they enact, should proper devolution take off.

Mine would be that any publican in Yorkshire selling a pint of ale for over four pounds, should be tarred and feathered and have a sign placed around their neck saying "London interloper"

More national than local, but how about a law requiring people to pull over if travelling below the speed limit and have more than five cars stuck behind them.
