The Marches route has been closed between Hereford and Shrewsbury since Approx 1900 and will be for the remainder of the day due to a signaller being taken ill and no replacement available. Box said to be in Ludlow area but the next box is Woofferton but that is only my assumption. Limited road transport available from 2100 to serve local stations, with ticket acceptance agreed between Hereford and Shrewsbury via Birmingham. Hope the signaller will soon recover.

In the end the line was only closed for a short while as the signaller at Dorrington kindly agreed to close that 'box and drive across to Bromfield to work that 'box instead in order to keep the line open.

Can never remember, but presumably Dorrington can switch out and just make a longer block section?

Yes, Dorrington can switch out, leaving a long section from Sutton Bridge to Marshbrook.
It does most nights, and is the only non-24/7 Box in the area.

Good thing the signaller was willing to drive across and change boxes presumably there would be no obligation to do so, nevermind the petrol costs of driving.

I suspect it was one of the Relief staff, as there isn't much interchange between residents on that line, and the two Boxes are quite different.

I doubt they will be, unless he/she submits a claim under the expenses policy. Something that is very difficult for non-office based NR staff to do.

More than one way to be paid back. Adding a couple of extra hours to a shift is one way.

They'd have to be daft if they hadn't arranged to be suitably remunerated for their effort. Under circumstances like this they could have named their price for helping them out of the s***...

Or they could just have a sense of duty to their employers and their customers ...

And just be nice people.

Relief signalmen receive a fairly hefty premium on top of their basic salary (which varies depending on the distance that they're expected to travel from their home location - mine was 24%) in return for greater flexibility and to cover the time and cost of the extra travelling. They looked after me pretty well, so in return I was generally more than happy to help out in situations like this - it was pretty common for us to be asked to work an 8-hour turn and then to go somewhere else for 4 hours' overtime somewhere else (sometimes at very short notice too). Sometimes I asked for a little bit extra to do something that was particularly inconvenient, but not all that often because I felt like I was getting a pretty good deal overall!
