I would opt for a Warrington-Preston stopping service running using a couple of class 323. Calling Pattern WBQ-Earlstown-NLW-Wigan NW-Euxton-Leyland-Preston. I would try to run hourly to ensure local connectivity.

  • Finally, Rochester to Bishop Auckland via Thameslink, which is unlikely given the upgrade, or the WLL/NLL, with 442s stripped of their traction equipment and replaced with bimode dual voltage motors. This would call at: Bromley South, London Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon, St Pancras Int'l, Stevenage, Peterborough, York, Darlington, Newton Aycliffe & Bishop Auckland. If Thameslink is unavailable then the stops along the WLL would be Imperial Wharf, West Brompton, Kensington (Olympia), Shepherd's Bush, Willesden Junction, West Hampstead, Gospel Oak, Camden Road.
Attached is a map of this network:
openaccess.png

I like this idea but should really be extended to Margate/Ramsgate at the southern end

Leeds to Cornwall trains at weekends. Three portions - Falmouth, Looe and St. Ives/Penzance. 4 car voyagers x 3.

Go-South Railways

Only these stops, 4 trains per day each way.

Clifton Down - Bath - Yeovil - Dorchester - Weymouth - Poole - Bournemouth - Christchurch. Add Saltford, if it opens. If First (GWR and SWR) start moaning, substitute Oldfield Park for Bath (or re-open Bathampton) and sub Branksome for Poole and Pokesdown for Bournemouth.
Well apparently metro West will operate a half hourly Avonmouth to bath spa calling at all stations so that's clifton to bath bit nearly.
Now with all the new signalling at Clifton Down turn Arounds already catered for.

I would add in stops at Golborne, Standish and Coppull if those stations were to reopen.

I would also suggest extending some of those services, perhaps to run Chester > Blackpool South.

But it's a very good suggestion nevertheless.

My plan is a Paddington to Bristol temple meads service. This would run on a Sunday with a new idea for the line, drivers on a Sunday. Passengers would of course be sceptical about a full Sunday service but given time and a charge of full rate for tickets this will soon catch on. The trains will be bi mode to please the people of Bath who still use gas lamps. For people unlucky not to get a standing place we apologies for the seats.

A few routes I've come up with:

Liverpool to Glasgow Central (Wigan, Preston, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Carstairs, Motherwell).
Leicester to Bristol (Nuneaton, Birmingham New Street, Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Parkway).
Adding a Middlesbrough portion to Sunderland trains. It would detach at York and run either non-stop or via Darlington.
Edinburgh to Aberdeen express (only calling at Dundee).
Manchester to Lincoln (Stockport, Hazel Grove, Chinley, Dore & Totley, Sheffield, Worksop, Retford, Gainsborough LR).
Cardiff to Liverpool (via Welsh Marches and the Halton Curve).

Also, more logical Thameslink routes that run fast-fast or slow-slow rather than the current way (example: Maidstone to Welwyn) which is fast-slow. Things like Kings Lynn to Brighton (all stations to Cambridge, St Pancras, Thameslink Core, London Bridge, East Croydon, Gatwick Airport, Brighton) or Orpington to Hertford North (all stations via Catford).

Lol Like it but sorry no matter what fantasy route you have in mind some things just need a miracle

I've thought for a while that it would be good if 1tpd to/from King's Cross could run Aberdeen-Dundee-Haymarket-Edinburgh-King's Cross. I don't know how much time it would cut, but I'd certainly use it in preference to the slower VTEC services.

I've often debated if having a non-stop Edinburgh to London service would be a good idea. I've come to the conclusion that, because of the speed restrictions around Newcastle and York, there's no point running them non-stop through either of those stations.

Here's a few ideas (some a bit more tongue in cheek than others):

Bournemouth - Chester/Liverpool (calling at Christchurch, Brockenhurst, Southampton Central, Romsey, Salisbury, Warminster, Westbury, Trowbridge, Bath Spa, Keynsham, Filton Abbey Wood, Bristol Parkway, Yate, Gloucester, Cheltenham Spa, Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcester Foregate Street, Great Malvern, Ledbury, Hereford, Leominster, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Wrexham General and Chester. Peak time trains would run via Halton Curve and stop at Runcorn, Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street)

Birmingham Moor Street/Birmingham Snow Hill to Weymouth (calling at Solihull, Dorridge, Warwick, Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford, Swindon, Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge, Westbury, Frome, Yeovil Pen Mill, Dorchester West and Weymouth. - Trains would stop at Maiden Newton for the exchanging of tokens only)

Brighton to Plymouth & Swansea (calling at Hove, Shoreham-by-Sea, Worthing, Barnham, Chichester, Havant, Southampton Central, Romsey and Salisbury where the train divides. Front three coaches for Tisbury, Gillingham, Templecombe, Sherborne, Yeovil Junction, Crewkerne, Axminster, Honiton, Exeter Central, Exeter St David's, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot, Totnes, Ivybridge and Plymouth. Rear three coaches for Warminster, Westbury, Trowbridge, Bradford-On-Avon, Bath Spa, Oldfield Park, Keynsham, Bristol Temple Meads, Filton Abbey Wood, Patchway, Severn Tunnel Junction, Newport, Cardiff Central, Bridgend, Pyle, Port Talbot Parkway, Neath and Swansea.)

I would suggest that adding a stop at Southampton Airport Parkway and/or Eastleigh between Southampton Central and Romsey, would generate extra passengers as well as better connections.

Whitby to Scarborough via Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Newcastle, Carlisle, Barrow, Lancaster (reverse), Skipton, Bradford (reverse), Leeds, Harrogate and York (reverse). Calling at all stations. With the right fares, I'm sure it would tempt people off the Whitby - Scarborough bus service.

How about a Company with a dozen trains - HSTs and locos+coaches:

May to September provide links to the coast from major cities......

Scotland to Blackpool
Scotland to Scarborough
North East/North West to Yarmouth
South Yorkshire and East Midlands to North Wales
Links to the South and South West

October to May

Some OA links to London from large towns
Links between business centres across the UK

Fantasy stuff!

As a University Student who studies in Sheffield, resides in Wolverhampton when not in the Steel City, adores the Chiltern's and scenic places in general; as well liking the beautiful game and who heads to London a fair amount throughout a standard year, mine is quite complex but understandable:

1ph Sheffield to London Marylebone, calling at Dore and Totley, Chinley, Stockport, Macclesfield, Stoke-On-Trent, Stafford, Wolverhampton, Sandwell and Dudley, Smethwick Golton Bridge, Birmingham New Street, Solihull, Leamington Spa, Banbury, High Wycombe, Wembley Stadium and London Marylebone, with a 5 Coach 222 Meridian which are the comfiest trains around IMO and of which solves the problem of Chiltern's not being Electrified

Following on from the above thread, I believe a 'Coastal Express Railways' TOC.

Routes:
Bradford - Man Vic - Warrington BQ - Crewe - Stafford - Wolves - Bhm NS - Coventry - Oxford - Reading - Westbury - Yeovil PM - Dorchester West - Weymouth

Reading - Oxford - Coventry - Bhm NS - Wolves - Stafford - Crewe - Warrington BQ - Wigan NW - Preston - Poulton-le-Fylde - Blackpool North

Newport - Hereford - Great Malvern - Worcester FS - Birmingham NS - Nuneaton - Leicester - Loughborough - Nottingham - Newark Castle - Lincoln - Market Rasen - Habrough - Grimsby Town - Cleethorpes

Chester - Crewe - Stoke - Derby (r) - Nottingham - Sleaford - Boston - Skegness

Stockport - Macclesfield - Stoke - Derby (r) - Loughborough - Peterborough - Ely - Bury St. Edmunds - Ipswich - Colechester (r) - Clacton-on-Sea

Dundee - Perth - Stirling - Whifflet - Motherwell - Hamilton Central - Glasgow Central (r) - Paisley GS - Kilwinning - Prestwick Air - Ayr.

Oxford - Coventry - Birmingham NS - Wolves - Teford - Shrewsbury = Wrexham Central - Chester (r) - Flint - Rhyl - Colwyn Bay - Llandudno Jct - Deganwy - Llandudno.

Initially these would run seasonaly in the summer, with them switching to year-round if popular. The point would be to encourage traditional seaside holidays, give a needed boost to our seaside resorts and encourage popularrail travel (maybe with suitable old-style posters)!

*Note: This is obviously ridiculous*

Easy: Reinstate the Cross-Country sleeper from Scotland to Bristol. It was apparently profitable at privatisation, but didn't fit neatly into a franchise. And it would be really useful for me to boot...

Seeing as we're not getting wires over the hills any time soon, how about a "low carbon" alternative to those thirsty 185s (which are now full of Batleyites and Slawitians anyway)? Instead travel from Leeds to Manchester by futuristic* electric train...

Instead, travel in electric comfort and know that you're doing your bit. Sure, our trains run via either North London or Scotland (it's pot-luck which!), but the extra 6 hours on your journey is perfect greenwashing!

*=well, 323s... at least they sound like spaceships!

I would give Lincolnshire the rail service it deserves calling it LincsRail using 2x5 car HSTs coupled up. All trains would offer fully cooked dining options.

London King’s Cross
Peterborough (set down/pick up only to avoid Peterborough-London commuters
Spalding
Sleaford (where the 2 HSTs would divide)

Front HST continuing to:
Ruskington
Metheringham
Lincoln
Market Rasen
Barnetby
Humberside Airport (new station)
Habrough
Stallingborough (renamed and rebuilt North East Lincs Parkway)
Grimsby Town
Cleethorpes

Rear HST continuing to:
Heckington
Boston
Wainfleet
Skegness

Service would be 2 hourly in each direction timing to connect at Sleaford to give Customers travelling between Cleethorpes, Grimsby and Lincoln to Boston and Skegness and vice versa proper connections.

Manchester / Birmingham to Paris / Brussels

Using some of those redundant 373 sets awaiting their fate in Kingsbury

4 Return 'flights' per day, per city, one each way overnight.

I might call it Eurostar and the night services, Nightstar!
