A new operator may well want to improve Scotrail's 1st class offering in the future.

Speaking as someone who travelled very comfortably in GWR First on an HST earlier this week, I don't think that there's any worries about the First Class onboard offering.

But if they mess up the lounges and other peripherals because they're cheapskating...

How very Abellio.

Assuming Queen St itself - didn't the spec of the station start pre Abellio? In any event, given the first class offering on ScotRail itself, a dedicated lounge might be a bit overkill.

I could, of course, simply be grumpy because ScotRail make no provision for disabled passengers in First Class, but, on the other hand, I'm not sure a dedicated lounge is really needed there, especially given the current plans seem to suggest that even the retail offerings will be greatly reduced (bear in mind pre-works the station had several SSP venues [Starbucks, Uppercrust, Burger King, Bonapartes], a Wetherspoons, Boots, a large WHSmith along with kiosk and a Sainsbury's Local - currently its limited to a couple of coffee carts from ScotRail Catering and others). Arguably serving a wider populous would be more advantageous and cost effective.

I thought that in both the 385 and the refurbished HSTs the accessible toilet is in the first class carriage?

Theoretically you could say the same about a 170 - however, a cursory glance at the plans for the 385 (on this very forum, coach DMC1) shows that while the loo is indeed in the same carriage it is not directly adjacent to First Class - it is a separate cabin so to speak.

While it could indeed be argued that someone who uses a wheelchair has their own 'seat' (and that might be a good thing when you look at the ironing board specials) that is only one part of the First Class offering.

Here we are at silly o'clock, which is the only time my "broadband" works tolerably, with Update 20, 2' 39'' of your life you'll never get back.
And yes, I have blatantly copied other people’s photo ideas. Like Reggie Perin’s boss, “I didn’t get where I am today by” being original.

Passed through this morning and saw platform 1 extension now in use. 2x156 units (not coupled) sitting there , and the platform clearances were being checked on the inside unit. Perhaps that was the first 156, or even the first train, to use the new bit?
By the time I made it to platform 1 the front train had roared off, so no photo I’m afraid.

New platform arrives for Glasgow Queen Street passengers

Wednesday 9 May 2018

Glasgow Queen Street’s newly-extended platform 1 has entered service as the £120m redevelopment of the station reaches its first key milestone.

During the May bank holiday weekend, Network Rail completed a six month project to extend the platform by 50 metres, providing additional space for longer four-carriage trains.

Work stated in November 2017 with the demolition of the former ticket office and staff accommodation block to clear the space needed to lengthen the platform.

During the project, engineers worked over 11,500 hours to remove more than 4,000 tonnes of demolition material before laying 200 tonnes of ballast, 35 metres of new sleepers and rails, and installing overhead power masts.

Alan Ross, director of sponsorship for Network Rail Scotland, said: “We are transforming Glasgow Queen Street to create a bigger and brighter station and successfully completing the extension of platform one is the first significant milestone for the project team.

“The redevelopment of Queen Street, and the recently completed electrification of the main Edinburgh-Glasgow line, is part of our plan to build the best railway Scotland has ever had – delivering longer, faster trains with more seats for customers.”

On Friday (May 4), Transport Minister Humza Yousaf visited the station to view progress on the extension works.

Mr Yousaf, said: “It’s great to see very real progress at Queen Street Station with the accelerated delivery of the platform one extension. Once complete, the redeveloped station will deliver a fully accessible, modern, transport facility that better serves the needs of passengers and the city while also enabling longer, faster, greener trains to operate.”

In addition to the extension of platform 1, platforms 2-5 will also be lengthened to accept trains up to eight-carriages long.

Consort House and the Millennium Hotel extension buildings are currently being removed from the front of the station to make way for these longer platforms, as well as a new station frontage, concourse and entrances.

When complete in 2020, the redeveloped Glasgow Queen Street station will offer customers an expanded concourse with more circulation space and improved customer facilities in a contemporary and distinctive building.

The new station is being delivered as part of the Scottish Government-funded Edinburgh-Glasgow Improvement Programme.

Aerial view retweeted by ScotRail yesterday also:

This is one building that won't be mourned by the masses once it's gone. Practically sucked all the life out of the Square. The fact that it hid the train shed from view just added insult to injury. Good riddance to bad rubbish, as the ol' saying goes.
Indeed. Compare the above view to the same one in February 2017. Like night and day.

Thanks for the picture. I had no idea that timber was to be used in such quantity....

Was Platform 1 ever as long as the others?

Progress update - 4th June 2018.

The Millennium Hotel extension is now nothing more than a pile of rubble (thank god), the only visible sign of it now being a lone jagged support beam defiantly standing tall over the pulverized remains. Meanwhile, Consort House is rapidly being taken apart; work currently appears to be concentrated on the rear section of the building closest to Platform 1. Getting quite hard to keep up with the rate of this demo work!

Off topic, I know, but what is is it about the construction of Consort House, compared with the Millennium Hotel extension, which makes its demolition so much more time-consuming?

I would guess it's a combination of the Millennium Hotel being the end they started at, and that building essentially just having a massive void at the bottom where the taxi drop off was. Interested to know if there's any more substantial reason though

I noticed that part of the screening on platform 2 was removed revealling a whitewashed refurbished section. Not sure of the purpose of this, its behind the barrier line so cant be another temporary entrance surely?
