Choosing to put these tributes up next to his victim’s house in a deliberate attempt at trolling/intimidation is the problem.

Good of the police to say we have to "respect their right to grieve and that they shouldn't "feel intimidated.

If only the Met gave as much of a toss aboit their numerous victims. It's only burglary, though, ain't it?

I’ve just read the latest :frown:.

It gets worse and worse. Hither Green is a decent area and is now being terrorised by a family of travellers. And this can’t be prevented because it’s a drain on the Met’s resources?! Oh well, that’s alright then!

I suppose that’s what you get when the local police force becomes a “police service”. That and a murder rate equal to New York’s.

If they need advice, I could tell them how I’d normally deal with a plague of vermin... <(

I just heard on Question Time that Richard Osborn-Brooks’ disabled wife was in bed upstairs during the attempted burglary, a fact that I hadn’t been aware of previously.
Is this true does anyone know?

This was reported by a couple of outlets at the time. Neighbours say that he is her primary carer.

I heard that, I put myself in his shoes, and to be honest I’m still absolutely raging on his behalf.
It would’ve been enough for me to do what he did in his position.

Anyone remember the chaos in Cromer a year or two ago, where travellers literally invaded establishments, and one of them even finished off raping someone? The police at the time pretended nothing of note had happened and didn't come to the aid of those pubs and restaurants being more or less ransacked.

Locals were somewhat angry that the police stood by watching, reminiscent of when the police initially stood by and watched people rioting and looting during the 2011 riots.

Eventually they had to apologise and admit that there were serious crimes committed, but it was obviously far too late. I've come to notice that the local police only care about moving people on. Then it becomes someone else's problem.

Yep, very much so. And everyone tried to downplay which community it was that did it, and that serious crimes were committed. The police for weeks were arguing that the particularly violent rape of a young woman had nothing to do with the infestation (and I do not use that word lightly).

The issue is that the criminal justice system does not take burglary seriously enough. The police don't care, the courts don't care. Add in the police's fear of actually dealing with certain communities...

Yes, where else would she be in the early hours of the morning?

I didn't see Question Time last night but surely it's time the police put a stop to anymore floral tributes being put up there, apparently he actually died in hospital anyway. I'm not going to celebrate his death but the fact is that if he hadn't been burgling a house he would still be alive today and if his death deters any other would be house burglars then all well and good.

I just hope that the householder and his wife are having a nice holiday somewhere, they don't need all this stress at their time of life.

I didn’t realise there was anyone else in the house George.

Don't worry I'm sure we've all done that before!

Not content with just leaving tributes for the death, the family is now leaving tributes for his birthday...They are on a wind up surely.

https://www.aol.co.uk/news/2018/04/...rglar-bring-birthday-tributes-to-scene-of-de/

"The row over tributes laid in memory of a burglar stabbed to death in an altercation during a botched raid on a pensioner's home has continued as crowds of relatives marked the dead man's birthday.

Around 20 women from the travelling community arrived at South Park Crescent in Hither Green to lay flowers close to the spot where Henry Vincent, 37, fell after being fatally injured in the home of 78-year-old Richard Osborn-Brooks."

I read that Mr Osborn-Brooks and his wife have not returned home for safety reasons.
In general, in situations where a person has to go move elsewhere for safety reasons, who would pay for this if the person had nowhere available to go and insufficient money to pay for a hotel etc?

I’m disgusted at the police saying that there has to be respect on “both sides”.

That street has been burgled repeatedly by that family and the respect the family are due when visiting that street is nil. Nothing.

The police need to take a stronger line with Travellers or we need laws to enable them to effectively deal with the problems some of their communities pose.

I don't see why the police and (by virtue) us as tax payers shouldn't pay for this. It's not as if we don't already pay for scum like Jon Venables etc.. to be protected and have a new identity, and woe betide anyone who would give his new identity out...

The police are frightened of them. Nothing new either. I was in the police in the late 1980s and was basically told to ignore whatever they were doing unless it was something VERY serious such as killing or maiming someone. I arrested a few of them over a couple of years for "minor" things such as breaking into cars, pub fight assaults, etc., and each time was told in no uncertain terms by the custody sergeant to let them go without charge. One of the reasons I left was that I couldn't stand their double standards, when they'd happily arrest/charge other people for lesser things.

Whilst I don't like the paper, I think what has happened to the poor bloke is disgraceful... scum win again

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/forced-home-fought-defend-sight-12381875

It’s absolutely appalling, although I can’t say I’m remotely surprised at this development.

As if to rub salt into the wound there has been a dispute ongoing locally for a long time about a proposal by Lewisham council to use public money to purchase land (from Network Rail) for a permant site for the “travelling community”. The current tenant of the earmarked site, a local scaffolding business, would presumably face eviction.

Needless to say many people who live locally are appalled at the proposal. It seems not only do scum win but they have a local authority bending over backwards to accommodate them!

https://se6.life/t/lewisham-council...-catford-land-for-the-traveller-community/123

The proposal is to use the land as a permanent traveller site for at least six residential pitches.

The average size of the pitches would be 500 square metres, including the space required for access and driveways. The traveller site would provide sufficient on-site parking for residents.

Vehicles would enter and exit the site from Fordmill Road. We assessed the site to confirm that there is enough space and road width for caravans and emergency vehicles.

The site is part of the River Pool Linear Park site of importance for nature conservation. This would need to be reviewed.

The existing scaffolding yard on the site would be given as much time as possible to find an alternative premises and we would help to find an alternative venue.

This site is at risk of flooding from the river, but we have looked at the flood risks associated with it and are satisfied that these can be addressed. If this site is chosen, we will carry out a further detailed assessment.

People, generally, are policed by consent. Most people in the community agree with the authority and the need for the police, so the system works.

Now certain other communities, on the other hand, have a very very different moral compass to the rest of us. Short of driving a Caterpillar through their camps, there's little you can do. Which is why the police turn a blind eye to offences as serious as a prolonged and sickening violent rape of a teenage girl in Cromer.

The police have arrested somebody in connection with the burglary, believed to be the accomplice.

I would not feel very proud to be a member of the police force having read this thread.

The sad result of a government who genuinely don't care about society and want to cut absolutely everything, including the vital lifelines which keep that society running, like a functioning police force who can actually fight crime. We can only hope that Britain's Rudy Giuliani moment comes sooner rather than later to fix this total mess of a country that we have to tolerate currently.

The funeral of the burglar takes place today. It is believed that there are no plans for the procession to pass the house in Hither Green but there will be a large police presence in case of any problems.

If the family’s recent acts are anything to go by then they’d probably be attempting to bury the burglar in the back garden of the victim. That would really grind my gears!

I don't claim to remember all the details, but it was one of those 'cameras following the police around' TV shows that were popular 15/20 years ago, of the ITV variety in this particular case, and was in the West Midlands somewhere. A quite major crime had been committed and the perpetrators were followed back to a travellers' site, but on arrival outside there were told by control (on camera) to 'back off' as they had no permission to enter!

A 79-year-old man who killed an armed burglar with a kitchen knife acted lawfully, an inquest has decided.

Mr Osborn-Brooks told Southwark Coroner's Court the 37-year-old had threatened him with a screwdriver, then "rushed forward" and "ran into the knife I was holding".

Coroner Andrew Harris recorded a verdict of lawfully killing.
An excellent result.
