Here's another of my rubbish mockups - a GNER Class 180 this time.



Based on a photo from Wikimedia Commons.

My photo-editing skills are fairly rubbish, but I imagine that that livery would look cracking out in the wild. Weren't there rumblings that GNER were considering Class 180s some time in the past?

GNER also had a Class 90 for a while.

They also had one of the best liveries to ever adorn any train.

They also gave the trusty Badger a good home, operating the single Class 89 locomotive for a time.

But even better than this: they once had Eurostars.

By the way: on the subject of Virgin, here's an excellent mockup of a Virgin Class 180 Adelante.

The Badger looked better in GNER than Swallow I think.

Someone won't be pleased about the Pretendolino 180!

East Coast had 5 at one point with three leased out to Northern Ireland believe. They never actually ran any themselves. Not sure about GNER though.

Though I would add a 91 for modern electric.

Of new trains my vote goes to the class 800. As for older the iconic hst and before that the A4 with silver Jubilee train.

Another vote for Class 68 from me.

A very stylish design.

That 180 in VT looks superb. For me though, the HST is a design icon, up there with the Ducati 916 and the Mini as timeless classics. I wish we'd got those challenger sets that were talked about early franchise.

I might be in the minority, but I love the 80s styling of the Class 91 in Swallow livery. Not bad in the VTEC colours too!

Whilst the HSTs are one of my numerous personal favourites, they have been mentioned quite a lot, so for some variety, I'll say the Class 442.

Definitely the best of the 3rd rail EMUs, I don't think many trains looked bad in NSE though.

It's a real shame they didn't do a 342 or make them dual voltage.

Or indeed a DMU, though 142 is of course already taken by something a lot less desirable

An a.c. 110 mph 442 would be an interesting idea.

I cannot even begin to imagine just how bad a 142 in NSE would be!)

I'm going to be terribly pedantic, and mention that the 76 is an EM1 and the 77 is an EM2. But you're obviously a person of impeccably good taste!

Shame it's defunct, there was a 142 in Virgin red/black someone mocked up for an issue of Model Rail a number of years ago.

That's actually pretty good, some similarly liveried Mk1s/2s and good for a Regional Railways Manchester-Sheffield service perhaps?

I think *anything* looks good in RR colours, it's just a really nice livery with just the right shade of dark blue. I also quite liked the "variant" liveries - if your brand is strong enough you can mess with the colours and keep it recognisable.

I think the blue makes it a lot 'bolder' than many grey/black based liveries and it thus it suits more shapes of train as it were.
