There's been a landslip as a result of heavy rain & melted snow between Guiseley & Apperley Junction, resulting in that section of line being closed, potentially for at least the rest of today. Most Leeds<>Ilkley services are cancelled save a few diverted via Shipley in the peaks.

A small landslip has occurred between Guiseley and Kirkstall Forge. This landslip occurred near the railway and moved a tree so that it has become unstable.

Network Rail are on site now working to clear the tree from the line and ensure that it is safe for trains to run through, and as a result of this fewer trains are able to run.

In addition to this, the line around Shipley may become congested, causing delays of up to 20 minutes to trains on all routes through the station.

We anticipate disruption will continue until the end of the day.

Customer information:

Northbound between 06:00 and 09:00 there will only be 3 direct trains from Ilkley to Leeds:
06:33 Ilkley to Leeds (diverted via Shipley)
07:37 Ilkley to Leeds (diverted via Shipley)
08:16 Ilkley to Leeds (diverted via Shipley)

Customers travelling to and from Ilkley to Leeds - please change at Shipley.

Customers travelling from Ilkley to Bradford Forster Square - services will run as normal.

It was 1 tree last night and Network Rail hoped to have it sorted by start of service this morning, then overnight a whole lot more slid down so that’s job stopped

That information page is terrible - before the bit you've quoted is an apparently randomly ordered list of cancelled trains.

https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/disruption/230

(copying it here has actually improved the formatting).

Ah, that wasn't there when I copied it, and yes that is terrible!! So much easier to say all trains are cancelled and travel via Shipley. I wonder if someone has just been trying to copy & paste from Twitter? Its going to be fun this afternoon, with the Easter school break even the off-peak Skiptons are busier without trying to shoehorn on all the Ilkley passengers. I think I might need a pint before leaving Leeds, and avoid the 17:26 like the plague....!!!

Edit: It looks like all EMUs have been pulled between Bradford & Ilkley now, with 2 car DMUs operating now & for the rest of the day.

A small landslip has occurred between Guiseley and Kirkstall Forge. This landslip occurred near the railway and moved a tree so that it has become unstable.

Network rail specialist staff have been closely monitoring the affected site and have now advised that for safety reasons electric trains will not be able to run between Ilkley and Bradford Forster Square in both directions.

In addition to this, the line around Shipley may become congested, causing delays of up to 20 minutes to trains on all routes through the station.

We anticipate disruption will continue until the end of the day.

Customer information:

Customers travelling to and from Ilkley to Leeds - please change at Shipley.

Customers travelling between Ilkley and Bradford Forster Square - a normal service has resumed. These services will have reduced capacity today and be formed of 2 carriages instead of 4. Road replacement transport will supplement the train services between Shipley and Ilkley.

Three coaches lined up at Shipley to the meet the 1626 departure from Leeds. The train seemed a little busy but there were a lot of people rushing over to platform 3 in the hope of catching the train instead of coach.

Looks like a large tree has slipped just after tunnel mouth immediately after Guiseley station behind Yorkshre Rose pub. Branches have then caught the palisade fence above the portal pulling it away with potential to fall on overhead wires.

That explains the 2 car dmus then.

I think I might get up early tomorrow to catch the 1717 EC from Shipley instead, don't fancy risking it with a load of extra passengers from Wharfedale even if it is half term.

EMUs are back in operation this morning at least, not sure if this will be the case all day as they were also operating in yesterday's morning peaks. But the situation remains, no direct Leeds-Ilkey save two or three diverted via Shipley in the peaks. But coming down on the 06:37 from Baildon to Shipley it seems quiet enough, not a huge number onboard travelling from Ilkley to Leeds though they may all be on the 06:33.

A fair few people were running across the car park trying to catch the slightly delayed 07:17 to kings cross. It wasn't held for them though so they will be on the 0735. Could be some pushing at Kirkstal forge though.

The 07:01 called at Kirkstall ahead of the diverted 06:33 from Ilkley (which looked like it was formed of a 150/1 & 158 after me saying it was back to all EMU, possibly because they were two of the units working the Wharfe line yesterday?) and there were only a handful of people there despite both trains being advertised as calling there, so maybe some regular users will be put off and drive or bus in? Were there more at Kirsktall when the VTEC went through?

Emu's were running Bradford-Ilkley this afternoon-I was on one. I don't understand the logic for running Bradford-Ilkley's and cancelling the Leeds-Ilkley's rather than cancelling the Bradford-Ilkley's and running Leeds-Ilkley via Shipley. There are vastly more passengers travelling from Wharfedale to Leeds, rather than to Bradford, and Wharfedale passengers for Bradford would have connectional opportunities at Shipley. The hired in road coaches (and there were some parked up at Shipley this afternoon) wouldn't be needed.

The system they had a few months back while the tunnel was closed seemed to work well. But perhaps that needs EMUs only for the timings to work.

I think this press release is new (and confirms the suggested location):

https://www.networkrail.co.uk/feeds...undergo-repairs-after-landslip-closes-tunnel/

Rail diversions in West Yorkshire will stay in place until Monday after a landslip above a tunnel caused extensive damage.

Shortly after 18.00 on Tuesday 3 April, the driver of a Northern train between Ilkley and Leeds reported seeing a tree perched precariously over the southern portal to Springs Tunnel, to the south of Guiseley Station.

Since then Network Rail engineers have been carrying out assessments of the damaged tunnel portal and the railway infrastructure as well as making plans to clear away the 80tonnes of fallen debris, which includes large trees and soil.

Repairs are now underway but are likely to take several days, and Network Rail and Northern are advising passengers travelling between Leeds and Ilkley to check before they travel, with alternative arrangements in place.

Chris Gee, head of operations for Network Rail said: “The downpours of the past week have caused some of the embankment above the southern end of this short tunnel to slip, resulting in around 80tonnes of material moving down towards the railway. Our teams have been working on site 24/7 since the landslip was reported and progress so far has been good. We’re working towards getting the direct service between Leeds and Ilkley back up and running by Monday morning and thank those who are disrupted by this incident for their patience and understanding.”

And another press release saying it's reopened:

https://www.networkrail.co.uk/feeds...eopen-yorkshire-rail-line-closed-by-landslip/

Network Rail has successfully reopened the rail line between Leeds and Ilkley after a landslip caused it to close last week.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 3 April when a Northern driver reported seeing a tree perched precariously over the southern portal to Springs Tunnel, to the south of Guiseley Station.

Network Rail engineers began carrying out repairs on Tuesday and worked round the clock to remove the 80tonnes of debris from above the tunnel, including large trees.

Due to the challenging location of the incident, it wasn’t possible to remove the debris from above, so the debris was brought onto the track below and then removed. This meant overhead line equipment also had to be removed and reinstalled once all of the debris had been cleared. Network Rail also carried out work to clean and improve a public access road and track which will improve the area for the local community.

Chris Gee, head of operations for Network Rail, said: “Our engineers have done a fantastic job and have worked round the clock since Tuesday so that we could safely reopen the railway for passengers this morning.

“We’re sorry for anyone who was inconvenienced due to this incident and thank them for their patience whilst we carried out this vital work.”
