Hi Guys

Could anyone please tell me would it have been possible to have taken a same day return train from Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central in 1986.

Any help on approx. time of last return trains, changes etc would be of great help.

Thanks you very much in advance.

Easily.

Not sure about 1986 but from the early 70s there was The Midland Scot, around 0815 from New Street arrived around 1245. Returned at 1730, New Street by 2230.

Good train. Used it a lot. Also had an Edinburgh portion.

Would there have been a later return train to Birmingham, that may have meant a change and a long wait somewhere, rather than a direct train at either 17:20/17:30?

I have the summer 1986 timetable here. You could have got the train at New St at 0620, arrive Lancaster 0850. Get on the Manchester/Liverpool to Glasgow/Edinburgh at 0905 and arrive in Glasgow for 1157.

Return could be 1710 with a change at Crewe (10 mins) or 1720 direct (joining with Edinburgh portion at Carstairs). That's going by Mon-Fri timetable.

I can scan a few pages tomorrow if you want?

In the timetable dated 13.5.85-11.5.86:
Last train departed Glasgow C at 17h15, arriving Birmingham NS at 22h02. There was an 18h15 from Glasgow C for Liverpool and Manchester, splitting at Preston. No possible connection south. The next train for Birmingham departed Glasgow C at 23h45, arriving NS at 06h10 (through train to Bristol/Penzance)
In 1987 the Birmingham train was slightly later at 17h50 (arriving at 22h42), the Manchester departing at 19h20, but no longer conveying a Liverpool portion. (Liverpool pax to travel on 17h50 and change at Preston.)

Just spotted the 1720 direct on Saturdays & Sundays spent about 10mins in Carstairs.

Both got to New St for 2210.

(Summeer 1986 timetable)
17:20 was the last daytime WCML departure from Glasgow Central. Next option was 22:50 (FO) to Paignton, or 23:50 to Bristol (FX) / Penzance (FO)

Earliest northbound option was 06:20 Birmingham New St. - Lancaster; change at Preston or Lancaster onto Liverpool & Manchester to Glasgow & Edinburgh service, due Glasgow Central 11:57

Thank you to everyone for all your replies, they are really helpful and very much appreciated.

The reason for my original post was that on Saturday 2nd August 1986 I went to the football friendly, Celtic v Aston Villa.
Talk in the pub the other day got round to different games and this cropped up, but my memory let me down a bit.

I know I left New Street about 8am arriving about 1pm, going straight to the ground, returning after the game, but I can't remember if I had to make a change on the return, or if the train went straight through to New Street from Glasgow.
I know I would have been back about an hour or so either side of midnight.

Thanks again to all of you for the replies!
